Growing Automatic Transmission Problem ... wallet is not happy

My transmission is going out the door soon. The gears are actually slipping in some cases. To give an example ... after coming to a stop you give it some gas and the car won't move and then all of a sudden ... *CLUNK*. In addition, the shifts are getting progressively worse and sometimes even slip in between shifts.

I have decided to have the transmission rebuilt professionally. My problem is that the place I want to go to has the worst hours ever SOOOO ... since I am not an expert in transmission internals I have no clue what could possibly be the problem. Missing teeth? Bad Torque Converter? Bad TCM?

Anyway I was advised by the place to not drive the car if possible. Can anyone even hint at a possible problem and price? Suggestions/Advice?

I would recommend you pick up a low-mileage tranny and just swap it out.

The same exact thing happened to me when i bought a lemon maxima (98 gxe w/ only 98k mi) about a year ago. All seemed well for about a week before the transmission just got progressivly worse. The tranny would slam into gear and roll backwards on any incline. I could actually move the car backward while in drive by pushing with my leg out the door. I took it to aamco where i had it rebuilt. It was pretty pricy(almost 2 grand) but all is well so far and it has a nice warranty. They had to rebuilt the transmission, the torque converter, differential, new pinion bearings, new solenoid control, new input sprag, and a new front pump. The mechanics said that they almost never see maxima's in the shop and were suprised at the damage.

I just want to kill the person i bought it from!

Check to see if you are low in fluid. You might have a leak. Low fluid can result in slipping, stuttering when excellerating.

I did check the fluid levels and it was low so I added some. It may have been too late and the damage may have already been done. I am praying it won't cost 2K to rebuild it ... I can pick up a brand new tranny with a locking differential cheaper than that.

I know how it feels to get a tranny replaced or rebuilt. Its sucks. If you keep adding fluid and it continues to do the same then the damage is probably there. Be sure when you do get a new tranny to have them inspect the torque convertor. Most place do not warranty the convertor, but only the tranny itself. Good luck
