tranny questions??
tranny questions??
I heard it isn't smart to get a tranny flush but is there anything else I can do to it. I'm going to bring it to a tranny shop next week. What should I have them do? oh yea I have 140,000 miles and its auto.
So there is nothing wrong with your tranny, and you dont know what to do if anything. Why are you bringing it to a tranny shop? Mechanics love suckers like you.
Are you auto or manual? When the the fluid last changed if ever?

gear oil should be changed about every 30k miles. Its very easy to do yourself. Just go to a local autoparts store, get a funnle with a long tube and 4.7 quarts of your choice of gear oil and change it in your drive way.

Also sometimes when at a light ill hit the gas and then it will slam into gear and drive off. At WOT it also shifts at redline.I bought the car at 122k and now have 140k but I want to change the fluid and screen and want to know what other things I should change or if i'm going to need a rebuild. any suggestions???
Drain out the old tranny fluid - you can do it yourself. Use a 1/2" socket wrench (or a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter) to open the stop screw. Drain it just like you would your oil. Buy about 3 qts Nissanmatic "D" tranny fluid. Buy a 12oz bottle of Lucas Automatic Transmission additive and add it in between quart #2 and quart #3. (NOTE: please ignore any subsequent posts that mention "Bob, the Oil Guy").
Get a long tube funnel, and fill the transmission through the dipstick tube. The Lucas additive is very thick, so take your time.
What you can do is mix some of the transmission fluid with the Lucas to thin it out.
Make sure that you check the dipstick so that you keep the level close to the "warm" mark (although a little overfilling is OK, contrary to popular belief).
The Lucas will help a lot with the shifts. I got over 300k on my original tranny thanks to it.

I recently went to a Transmission shop and they told me tha they do not do flushes at all. So with my max being a 96 with 133,000 miles on it they said they would drop the pan and do a service for $89. I bought my max with 90 k and was not sure if thefluid was changed ever. The original fluid was still slighty pinkish, but i was having a little feeling between 1st-2nd geard.
Well they dropped the pan, cleaned the screen, magnet, and changed some filter or screen in the tranny. i asked them if my automatic tranny looked in ok shaped when they dropped the pan, and they said everyrthing looked fine. Now my 1st-2nd shifts I cannot even feel, and the rest of the shifts are the same. Feels brand new.

(1) measure the diameter of the pan.
(2) measure the height(depth) of the fluid in the pan
Multiply the fluid height (H) times Pi (3.14) times the diameter (D) squared, and then divide by 231.
In other words:
Height * 3.14 * Diameter * Diameter / 231
This will give you the volume of fluid in the pan in quarts, and the amount of new fluid to add.
