96 Maxima- Hard Start in the Morning
96 Maxima- Hard Start in the Morning
Hello, I have a 96 Max, and I have a hard start in the morning all the time. I changed the Alternator,Battery,Knock Sensor,Camshaft Postition Sensor,Fuel Pressure Regaltor and the Starter. The only way I can start this car in the morning, if I pump the gas a couple of times, while I turn the key. This car is driving me crazy. Has anyone had this problem with this car-? If so, how can I fix it.-? Any help would be deeply apperciated, thanx.
when you are starting the car, does the starter crank or not? and it seems to me that the intake manifold needs to be adjusted, cause you are stepping on the gas couple of times and letting air into the cylinders and helping the car to breath. But without stepping on the gas the car can't breath and not starting. That is just me thinking logically, there maybe more behind all of this.
everyones gonna say it, its basic maitenance clean your idle air control valve, and clean your throttle body, as well as check your Engine Coolant Temp sensor and see if it needs replacement

and
I am not sure pumping the gas pedal really does any thing during starting. The ECM uses the Open Loop mode and Simultanous Injection mode during starting. So it is getting more gas anyway. Read thru this posting, there are 2 very different hard atrating problems discussed. It may help you in narrowing down your problem:

When I was starting hard in the morning (or in cold weather), I always jumped on the gas pedal right after it turned over. For whatever reason, the car didnt just idle and die, but stayed on. It went through some strange transitional period (cant explain it well), and it finally started to run normally. Replacing my spark plugs fixed the problem in this particular case (was just following the Haynes manual's what-if's). I also cleaned the TB afterwards, and that also helped some.
I did get CEL'S for those items and replaced them. The starter does crank while I turn the key, then after I hold pump the gas a couple of times it starts.
I also changed the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor already.

1998 having same problems
Been having the same problem, although just recently it started to get worse. Orginially when I would start the car it would make a "grinding" noise as if I was turning the key too long. I'm sure everyone has heard it before. Problem is I wasn't turning the key too long. This noise eventually went away. I was in the process of trying to figure out what it could be when it stopped. And when I say trying to figure out I mean guess, instead of actually troubleshooting.
Now it seems to what I call "poop out" when I try and start it. In order to keep it running after starting I have to pump the gas pedal. This usually only happens when I try and start the car after it's been sitting for a while. The first start in the morning or after I get off work is usually the only time it happens. Once it's past the first start I don't have any problems while running errands etc.
I plan on cleaning the throttle body this weekend (when I have the time). I was going to change the oxygen sensors until I read that you don't have to worry about them unless the engine light comes on. I also thought about the MAS (mass airflow sensor) and maybe replacing that?!
I hope it's not this wiring harness that costs $2000 that everyone in the other post were talking about!! What are Nissan parts so darn expensive!?

My Uncles 98 has same problem
I also has this problem with my 00 maxima. when i changed the MAF sensor the problem went away. and lots of power gain. the MAF for my 00maxima only costs $100 at the dealership. does anyone know if i can use the same MAF on my uncles 98, cuz i called the dealership and they wanted $525 for the MAF for a 98. I found a rebuilt for $240 but i was still hoping for $100
