Quick tire question

No response in the wheel forum, so I'll try here really quick. Some guy said he had 19x9 Evo 5s on his 95 Max with 225/35-19 Toyo Proxes. Can 225s even be mounted on a 9 inch rim? He said one rime got bent from a pothole and yet still held air for at least a year of driving on it. Does this seem legit? The price seems right.

EDIT: different package: will 245/40-18 in the front and 275/35-18 in the rear fit if the guy says they both have ET45 offset?

i wouldn't suggest the 19's since tires are really expensive, seems to me that you're trying to save the most money. If thats the case i wouldn't suggest the 19's. As for the 18 package, ur def gonna need new tires. the back is a lot wider than the front which means you cannot have tire rotation n most likely the fronts will wear out much much faster that you would like and meaning u will need new tires, hence not saving money. If the rim is bent al il, yes it will still hold air, i have 2 lil bends on my rim n still hold air perfectly fine. If the tires on the 19's are at least 80% thread left, meaning if you buy a tire guage and it reads 9/32 since new is 11/32, you're good to go, otherwise i'd keep on shopping around....

p.s. if you are takling about the ones that have 50% tread left on the 18's, way too expensive n keep on looking

yeah, i agree. needs more rubber on there. and at least a decent ridge to stick out further than the rim itself.

^^^thanks a lot! that really helps me out. I have just started shopping for rims and I think I'm a little overwhelmed! Too many! lol! They were both on Evo 5s, so it was tempting, but I guess I'll keep looking. I don't think I'll ever buy anything though cuz it's too hard to decide! How did you guys decide?

225's would be a stretch on 9 inch wheels. Usually people only do that for drifting purposes, which is what that s13 in the pic is set up for

Why are you trying to undersize? I oversized my 96 stock steelies (6" wide wheel) to 215mm, the stock size is 205mm. If I had really wide rims (and personally you'd never catch me with a power-robbing 18" or 19" dia wheel) I'd try to get the fattest, stickiest rubber out there. Personally if I was looking for wheels for the Max I'd bet getting 17 x 8.5's and putting 245 or 255mm high performance tires on there...

The more surface area you have, the more lateral force you can hold.

yeah, i knowm but i'm on a budget and it would be nice to get some rims used with decent tires on them rather than having to buy new rubber right away. but i suppose if i'm on a budget, 19's are not the way to go.: so hard to find Evo5!!

The drift boys are into it.
They believe it gives no sidewall flex and responsive handling,

i have 02 rims on mine which are 8 inch rims and they come with 225's. Just right. If you dont drift you dont need to stretchem. They look like rubber bands if you ask me.

Aren't both the 2002 SE and GLE rims 17" x 7.5"? Yes, the stock width is 225, I think the size is 225-45R17. I have no idea about the 2002 GXE, there were so few of them built.

18x11 215/35/18

wow, that's awful. how does that even look good??
so it i have stock sawblades, 15 x 6.5, right? i have 215. so if i go to 17 x 7 or 7.5, what tire width will be comparable? what will still allow me to have a bead of tire extend beyond the rim lip?

225 would be fine on a 7 or 7.5 in wide rim. but 235 is more common. best bet is 235/45/17 <- they aren't too expensive. Anything bigger than 17" is almost twice as much. If you do the 235 I'd go with the 7.5 inch rims.

depends on the wheel size and tire profile.

Most common sizes for an 18x7.5 will be 225/40/18 this is what is usaully offered in those wheel/tire packages.
Another common size for the 18x7.5 would be the 235/45/18.
One thing to remeber is, whenever you go wider, the tire profile goes up a bit too.
So a 225/40/18 vs. a 235/40/18 (which is an odd size) will mean the 235/40/18 will have a slightly higer profile then the 225.

right. i understand how that all works. i think i'm lookin at 17s rather than some power-robbin 18s. that will probably end up bein 17x7 or 17x7.5. common tires would then be 225/45/17 or 235/45/17?

225/45/17 are the right size for the accords n rsx n what not. You can go a lil bigger so ur diameter isn't thrown off that much. If you compare 22.5/45/17 to your stock tires, the wheel/tire will be a lil shorter n create a bigger wheel gap. You should be looking at 245/45/17 or you can do 225/50/17. 18's should be 235/40/18. but 225/40/18 is ok too, just that its easier to bend the rim with those tires.

This tire calculator lists recommended rim width ranges for most tire sizes.

As everyone else has probably said, you can mount as small as a 215 or 205 on a 9" rim. Drifters do it for more aggressive wheel offset fitment and also because the tires are cheaper.

Don't know about the front, but the rear will likely not clear if he has a sway bar. I had 255/40 with +44 offset and the tire sidewall BARELY cleared the sway bar bracket.
