some might say that, some would not. i think you should post this in the general forum or get it moved as a lot of answers will be biased. i like how the 4th gen looks and drives. also, i would always prefer a stick over an auto tranny. i take it you're in the market for one?

if you're goin for style, i would say 5th gen then. but i think the 4th gens are a better drive in terms of feel and such.

Depends on what you want out of the car, and supporting features in my opinion. A stripped 4th gen stick would be better to mod, being lighter and well 5spd. while if you want to throw on some 18s or just leave it stock i would much prefer the 5th gen auto.

Just for the record i own a 4th gen auto i bought to daily drive only, no big mods (if any). Just a background on the opinion.

Definatly the 4th gen 5spd. Not cause I own a 4th gen and love em, but because i have an auto and know how horrible auto is. Never will i drive auto again.

Both cars are great, but I like how the 2003 Maxima has 255hp and 6-speed tranny.

4th gen looks better IMO.

Swap a 3.5 in it or slap on a 00vi and you've got the same power with significantly less weight (and less drivetrain loss, if you're considering a 6 speed). 4.5 gen FTW.

I love that car but you wouldn't believe how much maintenance and other money i've put into it. It is a TT though, and its all worth it when you get finished fixing it or adding performance parts when it runs good...for the next two days.

Back on topic. I used to drive my 4th gen maxima a little hard, but not too much, it is quick but it's hard to make it go significantly faster without 2x as much money as the car is worth. It has been perfectly reliable, though and the engine was rated as one of the best by a lot of major magazines. 16x,xxx k at least spending only 500 or so a year on maintenance. I love how it looks as well, especially with the cefiro grille and headlights. Also it is super easy to work on, and parts are abundant. My .02.

I'd take a 3rd, 4th, 5th or 5.5 gen as long as it's manual transmission and the SE model.

if your going for performance 4th gen, mods and swaps galore ! Also the 4th gen has the potential to be very light.

But the 5.5 Gen (VQ35DE) is also a good performance option.

ROFL !

take off infinti badges and put Nissan and Maxima badges on an Infinti G35 sedan. I sometimes wonder if it was an assembly line mistake ? After 1,000's of maximas were badged infinti g35 sedan and vice versa. i guess they said, " O crap ! I guess lets just leave it ?"

I actually prefer the 4th gen looks as long as you get rid of the horrible stock wheel gap and throw some different wheels on there. I'd much rather have a modified 4th gen. I think the end result is a drastic change from stock. If you wanted a good looking car that was stock I would say go with the 5th gen.

I just picked up a 99 ES with 5 spd and the first thing I thought of was how small the tires are for the wheel wells.

They absolutely must be dropped or fitted with oversize rims/tires.

I have no idea what to do about it, but that's why I'm lurking here!

Good to see another ES! A drop will do the trick, then go for rims after. If you just get larger rims, the gap between the wheel and the fender will stay just as large and the car will be raised higher (4x4!). Check out Car Domain and you'll see lots of Maximas that are lowered...the improvement is quite noticeable.

I chose the 4th gen over a 5th gen...I'd still like to get a 5th gen someday but I love my 4th best for it's simplicity.

4th Gen looks the best for me. 4th Gen with a 3.5 would be my #1 choice.
