Difference between 8 tooth and 10 tooth Starter

I got a starter off eBay, and didn't realize it was different than my OE starter until I took it off the car. I had already taken of the OE starter, looked at both and said "f***-it, I'm already this far, if it works I won't have wasted my time." I bolted and plugged everything back together, tried to start it and nothing... tapped it with a hammer, then tried again, and started right up!

So, my question is what will happen in the long run? Is it going to hurt anything if the number of teeth on the replacement starter is different? If so, I'll just get the OE starter rebuilt and put it back on... only took 20-30 minutes.

I have a '96, that has a manufacture date of 6/95. The auction said the replacement is supposed to be good through 11/95.

First of all, I am taking you bought a used starter off of ebay. If it is used, it sounds like a bad solenoid. If its new, Send it back. Second, What was wrong with your original starter? Was it making the famous grinding noise just after your car starts? If it was, tear it down, clean up the old grease and regrease it. Worked for me.

I don't think the number of tooth would make that much of a difference. I had to replace my starter because it died out and wouldn't even turn the engine over. When I replaced mine, it was a different amount of tooth than the orginial one but so far I haven't had any problems starting the max up.

If you had to tap on your "new" starter to get her going again, I think it already has problems.

I too noticed that the drive gear area looked different with a rebuilt starter as compared to the original. I too thought Well I'm this far I might as well try it. Worked fine so far. Just curious why you bought off Ebay rather than your local parts store. Must of been price? I end up returning parts often, especially if I don't have the original part in hand when I'm there.

The 8th tooth design wasn't good because there are a bunch of diff **** between 95-96 maximas. Early made 95 maximas have less teeth on the flywheel I forgot the number count also have a 1 less crank bolt on the flywheel than later production 95-96 maximas. Nissan messed up so they came out with the 10 tooth design. They even have a 12 tooth upgraded version but I installed the 10 tooth one and there are no problems.

So it won't matter???

I'm not sure what everyone means. If you had a starter with 8 teeth and you replace it with a starter with 10 or 12 teeth, they all will work??? I thought that the extra teeth was to make the car turn over faster.

On my 95, I have used 8 (OEM), 10 and 11 tooth starter. All seemed to work just fine.

You got it... the eBay price was $25 + $10 shipping. Lowest junkyard price was $30, and I didn't feel like trying to get out of work early and driving out of my way to get there.

Thanks all... yeah, all I wanted to know was if the 8 and 10 tooth are fully compatible. Good to know that all of them, 8, 10, and 12 tooth, all work. Thanks. --Mods can lock this sucker.--

Your best bet if your going to buy a used one is to go with a 00 or an 01 starter from a junk yard. It's 11 tooth and it will be newer than a 95 starter. I have a 01 starter and couldn't be happier.
