Question for those guys who painted over chrome on stock grille(97-99)

OK my "chorome" stripe finally started slicing off on front grille it looks kinda ugly and i dont really want to buy new one. As i see a lot of you guys panted over the chrome and it's actually looks very hot especially on dark cars.
Ok my question is how to start this project what do i need should i rip off the chrome skin or just paint up top(which is wrong i think)and how to rip it off, what paint to use i've got black max. Should i apart grille first?
How to spray paint on it to get even layer. I really dont want to mess things up.
All tips and hints welcome

I think the painted grilles come standard on SE's and you should always prep before painting i.e. sanding.

you can just sand it down, get the chrome look off of it, use a good smooth grit, prime it good and paint it whatever color you want( black) and some clear. always sand between coats lightly.( for best contact) for a even coat, start a couple inches before the grill and go all the way to the end a few inches past,( never stop over the piece, follow thru i guess) and just go over it evenly, not to close tho or not to far from it. and please take the grill off the car and do it. scuff it up good and prime it once and sand it really smooth and prime again.
oh and i read in sport compact when they used rattle can flat black on a sti ( they did the whole car rattle can and it looked good....for rattle can imo) they put the cans upside down in a bucket with hot water for like 25mins, it helps make it shoot 'cleaner' and comes out finer i guess, try it out.

big thanks for write up
ok i think i'll just rip off the chrome part cause it's a thick layer glued on plastic and in my case it's not just chrome sliced, the whole layer sliced off and even if i'll sand it over it's still gonna be bubbling underneath.

painted mine black. not much prep work at all. just simple sanding with 800 and 1000 i believe. i used krylon fusion spraypaint. check the sig. black on black, matches very well and holds up tough. only had to spot treat some areas because stupid cars in front of me dont know how to drive and swerve and kick up a lot of debris on me. also do a lot of clear coats on top. i personally did 4black/6clear.
