Quick Question

Hey guys, I want to put leds in my gauges but I don’t really know anything about them. If u guys can answer these questions for me I would really appreciate it.

1. What size and type of leds do I need?

2. How many leds do I need to buy for my gauges?

3. Which is the best website to order the leds from?

4. what do I need to do to get my needles to light up as well?

ummm...usually you can't just buy any LED and have it work, because they usually only come in some voltages, and they burn up easy. The electrical rule of thumb is V=IR....where v is voltage, I is current, and R is resistance. Take the voltage your car produces, substract the voltage rating on the LED, and that is the voltage that you need to cancel out with a resistor. Solder the resistor to the positive side of the LED and give it juice. Good luck.

I was looking on ebay and i say these 5mm leds, but some had 10,000 mcd F/R 20,000 mcd F/R 40,000 mcd F/R and so on. What do they mean by mcd F/R and what is the difference between the numbers?

MCD is the brightness rating. I forget what it stands for. The higher the better, but it also means you'll pay more for each bulb. I think that F/R means that they are focused. LED's shine in a certain pattern. Focused means that they will shine in a 35 degree (or other variation) arc in front of them. You can get focused, and the other type which emits light in a bigger arc to cover more area with light. I think that you could use focused if you want too...it'll make the gauges even brighter.

would buying the focused leds have a greater chance of showing hot spots or not lighting up the whole gauge area?

it's a possibility. You can always get the other ones...and they will still be brighter than regular 194 light bulbs.
