http://marksink.com/tire_wheel_offset/offset.html

Depends on the offset of the wheel. 9.5 is pushing it but I believe several 4th genners have done 9s and I think I heard of some crazy f$ck with 10s...

I heard one dude did an 18 X 10 but never heard of people doing it with 19's.

The thing I like is that the wheel I am looking at comes in a variety of offsets. I am going the BBK route so the front will be a 19 X 8 with either a 20 or 35 offset. For the rear I would like to go 19 X 9.5 and have the choise of the following offsets:

1. 40
2. 35
3. 20

Based on this info, would anybody know the correct offset to make this work.

Thanks for the help,
Mike

What difference does it make whether the rims or 18s or 19s? The width is what we are talking about and the overall diameter should be the same if you pick the proper tire size.

Well 19x8 with a 20 offset will probably stick out a tiny bit...I think that looks ugly. 19x8 with 35 mm offset would be perfect in front, IMO.

In the rear I would go with 19x8 20mm offset, that would be perfect. Or get 15mm spacers so you can rotate the wheels.

If you have to have fat rear wheels, I guess I'd go with 19x9.5 with 35mm offset. Not sure that would fit but probably.

I once tried running wider tyres only on the rear of one of my sports cars, the TR6, (185's in front and 225's in the rear) and the handling was terrible, it was almost undrivable. After that experience I always keep the same tyre size all round.

I hear what you are saying about the rear, but to further elaborate..... I wanted to go 9.5 in the back just to have a nice lip. The 8.5 doesn't give me much of a lip. I guess I will just have to figure this out. Now that I think about it.... doesn't offset affect how much lip I would have on a rim.... someone please verify for me. Would the 20 offset in the rear give me a bigger lip than having the 35 offset if I went 19 X 8 all around? Also, the tire size would be 255/35/19???

Thanks,
Mike

This site is pretty helpfull all around, but I think 9 is the max before leading into some rubbing issues.http://maxmods.dyndns.org/?MaximaWheels

What do you mean by "lip"? Do you mean you want the rim to stick out farther than the tire? Lots of 240 owners do that and I think it looks pretty stupid. Good luck, I don't think you'll find much info on that here.

I don't think that would look good at all bro....too ghetto for a Max. I'd just stick with what you've got. If you really want something different, chrome your current wheels. If you want staggered, I wouldn't go bigger than 18"

Yeah in my opinion, big fat rims on the rear on a FWD is about as poser-ish as you can get.

I can tell you what I have run on my car. I don't go for the big "bling" wheels but I have run and 9.5 on the rear. I can run a 17x8.5 +40 255/40/17 front (looks great) and a 17x9.5 +38 275/40/17 rear. The fronts have not ever rubbed turning our under compression. The rears do not rub under normal driving, however I did find that the rears will hit under compression. Very high speeds and deep dips in the road result in the tires hitting the fender lip. I really like the looks of the setup and would keep them on, but they are my street wheels for my Z32. I also have a set of 17x9s +34 255/40/17 ("R" compounds) they have the same problem. The rubbing could be solved on this setup by cutting or rolling the fender. The 9.5s hit the smooth part of the fender lip, you could not roll the fender enough to eliminate the rubbing. Take note that this is what I have found on my car, and neither setup rubs 95% of the time. Take a look at the picture link under my sig...... BTW 17x9 +35 will stick out about 5mm in the front. Pics of that as well.

Lip is the amount of rim that goes from the center section to the edge of the tire, and the lower the offset the larger the lip. What you are talking about, where the edge of the rim sticks out and away from the tires is caused by streching the tire on the rim. Example if you put a 225 on a 9" rim the side walls have to strech out to seat on the bead on the rim. That gives the effect you are talking about. The reason it is popular with the 240 "drift" crowd is, when you strech a tire the side wall flex is eliminated and when used with a properly setup suspension makes the car easy to slide. Streching the tire is form following function.... it was popular with the "euro" crowd before we ever saw a drift event.

Go with the +40 rear, you can always add a spacer to reduce the offset. If you go to low on the offset you may end up with a wheel you can't use.

Ok..... I think my question has been answered. The real reason I wanted to go stagger was to get the bigger lip in the rear bt if you are saying all I have to do is get a lower offset to have a bigger lip, I will do that and get 19 X 8 all around. Now I just have to find out if 20 offset will work in the rear.

Ah, thanks, I sort of knew why they did it but thanks for clarifying.
