Knock sensor replacment

ok i have the ks code, and have had it for a long while.. The car seems to run fine with the code, but would it greatly help my performance if i replaced it? I replaced all the o2 sensors for gas mileage. So is it worth fixing? if so where is the cheapest place to buy it? Local parts store wants almost 200 bucks!! I just don't see that much money in that little "pinging detector".

What should i do?

Well if your current ks is in horrible shape and you replace it with a new one then yes you will get back performance. Were talking about a lot though....a big difference lot.

With the KS faulty the computer defaults to some g*y setting to avoid detonation, so you only hurting performance by not replacing it. That said it's never good to drive around with a faulty part even if the ECU has a backup plan in place.

i bought myne on ebay like 2 weeks ago. 68$ and a few bucks shipping. it works perfect.

my old one was CRACKED, i was really surprised. you have to have small hands for this job tho. i recomend sticking a 12 to 15 inch wrench/rachet with a bit that moves at the end (hrm.. hard for me to explain cause i dunno what its called :P).

loosen it up that way, then use some small hands to get in there. my girlfriend helped me out she still got scraped up, but not as bad as i would have been if i did it.

performance? i didnt really notice anything major, but many other people have. i still need a rear o2 sensor replaced (its melted on tho stupid repair shops i tell ya) - so mabe thats my problem.

EDIT: Hey should i reset the ECU? or does it see that there is a good sensor there and says hey YAY - good timings back. OR does just unplugging the battery for an hour do good enough?

Guys thanks for all your help... I think i will search ebay today for one.

Mindles you should reset the ecu to clear any codes. The computer will see that the new sensor is in place that way. That thing about the battery i believe is a bunch of bs. It does not clear any codes out. Think of it as unplugging your home computer for an hour. Anything you have saved on the harddrive will still be there right? Works the same way with the ecu.

IIRC it's 12 ft pounds.

Too tight and it'll be overly sensitive.
Too loose and it won't be sensitive enough.

it looks like you may be able to change the ks without taking the im off. both the upper and lower. i had just took mine out 2 day ago. its a real PITA if you don't have small hands. its not taking it out is hard but putting it back in and started that stupid bolt. you may get lucky using a swivel with the size on it. i think it was a 10mm. don't quote me on it. but hell just take the manifold off clean the throttle body,IAC,TPS and the manifold. you might have build up in there and you will feel a response difference. since you there check your valve cover gasket for leaks and the spark plug grommets, along with your fuel injectors. i did all that and the messed up thing is i got a bad ks. now i got to do it again. i'm try to do it with out taking the manifold off and tell you how it goes.

Replacing the KS is pretty easy IMO. I used a long ratchet extension and a magnetic "wand" (or whatever you want to call it).

The 99's with Cali Emissions have a swirl control valve that blocks 90% of the opening, which makes it a little more difficult.

On anything else, it looks like a piece of cake. It took me 45min at the MOST to get everything done. The hardest part was lining the KS and bolt back up to tighten it.

If you have the KS code, definitely replace it. Shouldn't even be in question. Gas mileage and performance regained are definitely worth it.

i'll just check the fsm I have and do it from there. I'll do all that clean up as well. thanks orleanzmax, if anything, i'll get back to you if i run into problems. I'm just starting the do it yourself thing on my car. It(the max) used to intimidate me, but f*** it, i'm going for it. This aint a 1990 jetta that's for sure LOL

An engine is an engine. They're basically all the same. If you mess something up, somebody out there will be able to fix it.

This can easily be done without taking the intake manifold off.

You should pay more attention to the stickys because that's what they're there for. Also, donate so you can search freely.

When someone posts a thread such as this one, and 2 or more 's butt in and ask the same question, that's an immediate sign that none of them read the stickys. It's part of your agreement when you sign onto to the site, and should be worth of at least a 3 day ban if not obeyed.

just have to say i been driving the car for a week or so after the install and i have noticed MAJOR gas milage savings.

i have a bad rear o2, but that doesnt seem to affect gas millage at all. so the KNock sensor is great! a real money saver and at about 70$ it was cheap and i now save alot on gas.
