My check engine light has come on and off for the past 6 months or so. Everytime I run the test it shows 4 long and 13 short(I'm positive). It seems like everytime I actually get annoyed enough to make a thread or ask somebody, it turns off again. Everywhere I checked 0413 doesn't exist. So does anyone know what it means or do I need to go somewhere to have a diagnostic test ran?

Code 0413 is bogus. Either re run the test or get an OBD II scan done......

From Haynes Manual:
0413 - Upstream oxygen sensor circuit slow response fault (left bank)

Are you quoting a "P" DTC code (obtained from an OBD II scanner)? If so, this is not what he is refering to......................

No. If you read the original post again he says "Everytime I run the test it shows 4 long and 13 short"...I would say that means he's manually putting the ecu into self diagnostic mode by turning the mode selector screw on the ecu and then getting the readout from the short and long flashes of the Check Engine Light, while in self diagnostic mode. This are not the same number that come off a OBDII reader. The equivallent code for this error would be P0153, if you read it from an OBDII reader.

I know it isn't an OBD II code, which is exactly why I asked the question; as there is no 0413 code is the self diagnostics list in my FSM................

Sorry to drag up such an old thread – but I got one of these 0413’s yesterday.

'98 SE here w/ 122K. Just replaced the PCV valve and the plugs a few weeks ago and the week before that changed out the alternator.

My SES came on yesterday while driving to work. Got home last night and worked the ECU screw:

Got four long and thirteen short pulses.

Found these threads VERY helpful (thanks njmodi & Trajiksmax!):

Quote: Looked in my Haynes manuel.
P0154=Upsteam O2 sensor high voltage fault (Left Bank)
0413=Upstream O2 sensor circuit slow response fault (Left Bank)
0901=Upstream O2 sensor heater fault (Right Bank)
0701=Multiple cylinder misfire detected
All in all sounds to me both of Your front O2 sensors are bad check the Knock Sensor also, this doesn't tend to throw a code. That was my case kept on going through O2 sensors. Finally brought it to get diagnosed, and the K.S. was bad. As soon as I changed that the O2 gremlin went away.

Quote: 0413 = Front heated Oxygen sensor, Bank 2. The left bank is the bank of cylinders closest to the radiator.

This is the front o2 sensor in the y-pipe closest to the radiator (front) of the car.

Replace it: www.oxygensensors.com (mention maxima.org for a discount) and get a Bosch OEM plug/play replacement.
Diagram of where the sensors are located:

Overall looks like the BOSCH 13242 is the way to go.
