New Engine Or New Max

Hey

I Have This 96 Maxima, With 180,000 Miles On It. Must Have A Good Amount Of Rust. Interior Is In Good Shape. But It Has It's Dents And A Larger One On The Driver Side.. Is It Worth Having A New Engine In..which Is An Estimated 1500 With Labor. Also I Need To Put New Calipers.rotors.pads. Plus Take Out Alll The Dents.. And Rust Treatment... Or Just Straight Out Buy A Used Maxima With Half The Miles

This is something YOU can only answer. Doing all those little things as a hobby is sometimes fun, but if you need the car for school/work ex. then it may be better to get a used maxima in good shape.

Also where are you financially ? That has a huge bareing on it as well

sell it, i have much less with a little rust and I'm gonna sell it. I'm want a 98 instead of a 95 and 5 spd instead of auto. Those are my reasons. You have to assess how bad your car's body really is, cause the rest is peanuts. The body counts

Why are you guys talking about new engines. Several members have 200K+ A32s that see redline all the time.

i really dont feel like having a 200,000 mile plus maxima..it just feels old..
the chassis makes noise..ehh.. nasty...it still is quick..kills eclipse gst's and keeps up with modified rsx type s'.. but it's an auto..and i might as well get a newer 5 speed and keep it in great condition...just seeing those 6 digits on the odometer just pissses me off

I USE-TO ask myself that same question all the time...

Mine had hail damage before tho... was really bad..

Needless to say 5-years and 5000$ later... she looks better than ever now. : )

estimate on how much the new engine rust removed and other things. compare that to getting a used 4th gen or something you want. Then go for the cheaper one.

Seems like the question is already answered if a loan would be a problem. So either keep the Max, or buy a car for ~$2k.

Where is the rust located. the noised you car makes can be just old worn out parts. Main thing is your 18, fix up the car some with some good TLC and make it last thru college, then sell the car and get something "better."

I say, leave the engine alone, if there is nothing wrong with it, give it a good tune up, lubricate the chassis well, (if its never been done) put on new control arm, swaybar end links, inner and outter tie rods, etc. Get an alignment, full wash, good wax, fill up tires, and keep it moving.

IMHO, your too young to want to get another car just because the engine has 180K on the clock, you have college right in front of you, worry about that.

4th Gens are a dime a dozen. Keep your eyes open. Don't rush and buy the first one you lay your eyes on. Take your time, and Good Luck.

school isnt anything to worry about, thats all settled, but since i got some help with college, the money that wasn't used is gonna go towards a new car around august.. with that i wanted to invest in an evo ix.. but ive been saving and it can keep accumilating and i wanted to get a newer max now, as a daily driver.

the road noise is tooo violent now.. very annoying...
rust is in the engine now.. like on clamps that hold my fan...
chassis is rusted, especially the rods..
makes this very odd noise when i go betwee 75 85mph. it's soo wierd.. it would start then stop after 85mph..
plus i smashed up the interior pretty bad..(got pissed)

i just cleaned out my throttle body and it seems slower..
it's like wtf...

If you can manage the payment plus insurance on an EVo IX for a 18/19 soon to be college student, then go ahead.

I'd say get a late 4th gen or 5th gen, tune it up nice, add some wheels, good drop, plus a few extra goodies, and maintain till you get out of school.

Go that route, high milage 98 (should be pretty cheap) already prepped vq35 from tilley ($1800) and drop it in, upgrade clutch, add nice wheels, drop and enjoy!!
