5th Gear, 60mph dropped to 0 RPM, car died

Yesterday: Got out of work, a mile and a half down the road, car started witha jerkiness and all lights went on on the dashboard, car died at 30mph, pulled her over and turn off. NO CEL YET. Cranked it but it didnt start, let it settle down for a while (5 min) . Cranked it again and it started but it took longer than usual (the time to start). NO CEL and i drove home fine. Mechanic said last night after pulling the codes P0115 & P0125 (CEL was still off). Diagnosed ECT.

So this morning CEL is on (i asssumed i went on with the codes i detected last night but didnt check). Went to the dealer during lunch to buy one ECT ($35). On my way back, just like the subject of the thread. I FREAKED OUT!!! All lights went on again and car died at the speed. Pulled aside and same story.

HELP PLEASE !!! Before go home i'll change the ECT (hope i have a tool i could use on the trunk) and reset the CEL.

Anybody else out there with similar experiences???

Well the ECT seems like a good place to start. When you think it through, what happened on both occasions? You started the car cold, you drove off, and after a certain amount of time, it died. Looks like as soon as it reaches a certain temperature, it dies.

I always warm up the car a little before drive off... u think a specific temperature would have that effect. I wonder what's the ECU getting and doing with wrongs reading from the ECT and if that could cause the aftermath is happening to me.

that's how semiconductors fail. it prolly either shorts out or completely opens the circuit when it reaches a certain temp. replace it.

Ok guys, I am new so I can't post my own thread yet. I am having similar issues with the wifes car. We noticed a sputter when we would come to a stop at a traffic light. I just changed the spark plugs, after doing a seafoam treatment. It seemed to help, that is until last night. We were driving around and noticed a little hiccup at a stop sign. We then kept driving but noticed a little hiccup in the rpms. I came to a stop, we noticed it really getting bad. I noticed the rpms jumping, going from normal to below normal and back to normal and so on. The lights flickered during this and really has me perplexed. Some tells me it could be the belts as we have not changed them and they have about 89k on em. Any ideas? This is the first and only problem we have ever had with this car.

i can't be that "lucky" that IACV got dirty at the same time the ECT is acting up. now I am at work and I have had the battery off for the last hour and went out and since it was cool already after i came back from lunch and changed the old ECT for the new one. It will stay with batt. off until 4pm that i leave home. I hope ECU reset itself after all that time without battery and with 35 miles (highway and city) from Work-Home it could relearn and get the new readings and adjust properly. If after i get home is still idling that low (500-400) i repost and see what could be affecting that.

AMAZING how can "she" change my mood when its acting up and not functioning properly. Even my g/f noticed it.

It official...Maxima owns me. lol

If you haven't cleaned your TB you should try it. My idle rpm went down from 650-700 normally to about 500-550 over a couple of months. after i cleaned the TB the idle went up to 800 rpms. now i have to adjust my idle too (that and i think my TPS is a little off)

Maybe your water pump is gone. You need to be REAL careful your not screwing something else up while driving it like that. This problem is definately temperature related.

Oh and after my car gets warm it idles at 500 rpm as well. I didn't think this was a problem? Is it?

no, when car is cold its idles high... only when it gets to normal temperature operation goes down to 500 and stays there like a a rock, no bumping, fan starts without any problems and shuts off after a while...so i'll try clean TB and IACV first see if that helps.

How often should the engine coils go out? We have had the car for 4 years and have replaced one already. But when we did that the check engine light came on.

Where is the best place to buy new engine coils??

Look, do a proper diagnostic before leaping to conclusions!
Take the car to a place with a decent diagnostic machine and ask them to check out the HT trace. That will tell you straight away what the firing voltages are on all 6 and show up any differences.
