how the hell do i get this axle in the tranny - 99 i30 auto lsd

I'm about 2 steps away from going insane trying to figure out how to get my axle into my tranny housing. I have the LSD so there'se 2 splines. I called the infiniti dealership and they told me something about spining the hub at the same time and trying to push it in... i'm not having any luck. The splines also don't match up so do I have to do something to properly align the splines into the tranny? Help? anybody? please?

so you put an i30t trans into your i30? Only the i30t had lsd didn't it? Or was it an option?

Thats the first time I ever heard that. TCS was only introduced in 1999.
LSD diffs. aren't on any TCS equipped 99 Maxima's, including my own.
Only the I30t had the LSD.

Are you SURE you have the correct axle? Something tells me you don't have LSD and you have the wrong axle. The axle's just pop right into place very easily. Something isn't right if you can't get an axle into your tranny.

I agree. The axle should slide smoothly into the tranny and click in at the very end. Sometimes the click isn't easy, but if you wear heavy gloves and push hard on the inner CV with your thumbs it should pop right in. If it's not easy get new circlips. (The ring on the end of the axle)

If it gets stuck before it's ready to click, check the splines for damage - both internal and external.

Yeah, what he said. PLUS, the axle must align and pop into place TWICE because of the two-stepped splines. It probably won't seat fully on the first try unless you get very lucky and align both sets of splines at once.

So after the first set of splines are aligned and seated, turn the axle and gently push until the second set are aligned, the seat the axle fully into the trans.

I had to stick in the axle, put a block of wood on the other side(where the big nut goes in) hold it straight and gently (GENTLY) tap on it w/ a hammer until it clicked in, worked fine after that.

just put it in the hole at tap it in with a hammer, whether its lsd or not it will fit except it will eventually pop out. the lsd is shorter than the non lsd.

Did yours have the 2 splines too? 1 bigger and 1 smaller?

Also find something interesting on the gears inside the tranny. the bigger spline has a spot where it seems they purposefully left out a tooth, does this have to do with anything?

Only the drivers side is VLSD the passenger is regular max axle. Which side is it??? don't force it in....did you compare to the old one. Only problem I had was getting it off, it went in easily.

Update: installing the axle

I finally got this thing in, I have no idea if the snap ring snapped into place. Anyhow, after fighting with axle for awhile I decided to buy another one, and fought with that for awhile too. I decided to take the snap rings off both of them and one of them I still couldn't get in, the other one fit in without alot of fuss, the initial spine on this was was completely grounded off (the band that's maybe 4mm or so), not sure if this had to do with anything. Took it out and twisted it, tried to put it back in and surprisingly it still went in. Put the snap ring back on fought with it for a few minutes and went right in. Then spent a few minutes hammering it in using the axle's plunging effect as a slide hammer, I hope the freakin' snap ring snapped into place as much as I tried to get that thing in. Test drove it and everything seems fine so far.

After reading many posts and searching the internet, I think I'll be spendin the extra cash and ordering from raxles next time. Surprisingly though, I went and picked up my core again and I couldn't get that thing back in either (w/ snap ring on).

I'm definately paying somebody else to change my axle's next time.

And? You said that it has LSD cause it's a 99. I said what does that have to do with it? That post is very misleading and the young minds of our countless noobs will think that all 99 i30s have LSD cause of it.

It's the driverside, I finally got it in after getting another axle. The difference on this one was that the snap ring was smaller and the first band of splines was completely ground off. I actually took the snap rings off everything and tried each axle (i had 3 including the old one), only the one with the band completely ground off fit in.

Observations, the one with the first band completely ground off went in easily in almost any position. I couldn't get either of the other 2 inside even with the snap rings off..

After getting the spline in I used the plunger effect as a slide hammer to get it in and used hammer for reassurance, I don't know if the snap ring actually went in properly, but I hope to hell it did. BTW trying to hammer the other axles in when I felt the grooves line up didn't work worth squat.

I am very relieved that this ordeal is over, and if it comes out again - I'm taking it to the pros...spent waaaay too many hours on this job.
