Stuck in Park

1995 Maxima GXE (Auto)

Trouble getting the SHIFT LOCK disengaged in order to shift into reverse. It normally works after a few attempts, but one day it took me 30min and I was late to class.

I've read similar problems online. My mechanic narrowed it down to a few potential parts that are dealer only. 1995 Maxima GXE does not have an emergency SHIFT LOCK release, and I don't want to spend $135 at the Dealer.

Tips?

Don't park anywhere you need to reverse?

when you get some where, make sure no one is looking, put it in nuetral and back it into a spot. that way when you leave, you can just put her in drive and go.

I think that will work fine until you can get money together for a new part or find another way of fixing it. Temporary Fix.

nothing bad about leaving it in neutral, but how are you going to get it in neutral without putting in the key, and how are you getting the key out with it in neutral? Lol.

why dont you try disassembling everything around the shifter and dismount what ever it is that locks it in Park...

i took everything around the shifter the other day and when i put my foot on the brake i could hear whatever it is clickin like it was just a lil clip...... i dont know for sure though, why dont you get in there and check it out....

I don't see what him getting into R has to do with the shift lock, it doesn't matter if he needs to back out of the spot or drive straight ahead, if the shift lock doesn't disengage he won't be moving the shifter into any gear position.

I had this problem for a while on my auto.. try depressing the brakes a few times and trying to move the wheel. eventually it moves freely... it seems to have fixed itself for me.

oh man, this just started happening to my '95 GXE. can't say for sure but it seems like the plunger? on the solenoid doesn't push out as far(or strongly as it should) when brake is depressed. for now, i have the trim that surrounds the gear sellector off. this way i can jiggle the linkage system gently and i'm off and running. for the time being, if you happen to get car jacked in traffic, just say, "lemme put it in park so i can, "get the fu** out", as you put it", to the scum and hope the locking problem recurs again. haha
EDIT: i use long screwdriver on the linkage.

Anyone know what that clicking is when the brake is applied? I am putting a 99 Bose in my 96 I30t tomorrow so I am going to check this out while I am doing this. Anyone who has already figured it out please tell me so I can fix it w/o searching around.

well, for my '95 maxima, it's a solenoid with an outward moving plunger when you step on the brake pedal.

Remove the gear shift trim and spray WINDEX onto the moving parts. It's probably sticky from a spill or something.

If its only stuck in park, its probably not anything sticky. I find just shaking the wheel and trying again and again frees it when it happens.

Why give that some thought as there is plenty to think of here in the delightfully intriguing 4th Gen?

I thought this was a contest of gentlemen held in the environment of a lesser degree hence the formality of a duel.

So it is, yet the work still speaks in the unforsaken territory. We shall duel as this is put to rest.

I given this advice plenty of times with 100% success. It may sound dumb until you try it. I worked on car stereo for 15 years. This is an ancient installer secret.
