Autotragic issue, stuck on Park!!!!!

Ok, yesterday while riding back home from the beach, my friend spilt coke on my shifter. Nothing big, we cleaned it up, no biggie right. Today I used the car all day, no issues whatsoever, but tonight, after parking it in a club in mexico, and getting back in to head home. It would not go. I pressed down on brake, key was in all the way, car was on, etc... but it wouldnt catch or the button wouldnt engage. You could hear the "click" when you press down the button but no go. We messed with it for a few minutes and it finally engaged and I was able to select whatever gear. No problem there whatsoever. I dropped off a buddy, placed the car on park, and again, it wouldnt engage. the button wouldnt go all the way in... you could hear the "clickin" but no go, again after some pressin of the button, brake, etc... it went thru...got home just now, and before I got off the car, I checkd to see if this was a one time thing, or a problem, again.. same sht...WTF? What could it be? I didnt have this issue all day to day in the morning etc... why now? I want to know what it could be, tomorrow morning I'm gonna mess with it, hopefully solve the issue, because I cant have this problem later tonite, with my date... Any ideas on what it could be, or I could look into?

Thanks...maybe its time I drop the auto, and go 5spd...

Take apart the molding etc to expose the area under the shifter and see if any spilt on electrical parts.

You may have to clean out the releasing mechanism if it's all sticky from the soda.

take off the shifter, and press on the metal thing on top manually. If that gets stuck, you might be a lil out of luck. You might have to change the shifter rod. But shouldn't be any harder than putt gas into your car, just have to go buy a part. Otherwise, just clean the shift **** throughly, or get an aftermarket one....but make sure that it has overdrive, thats only if you want to use it,

I have the same problem. If anyone is planning on taking off their shifter, please take pics and post for others
