auto tranny problems

My tranny was slipping when i was over 2500 rpms so I did a tranny service and added lucas oil.now 1-2 shift is fine,2-3 and 3-4 still slip a little but don't slam into gear like they used to. The mechanic said that it is like if a clutch was slipping but said there was nothing wrong with the tranny except maybe electronically.but there was no codes.anyone??????

my rpms jump like 400-600 rpms if i am over 2500 rpms but besides that it doesnt slip in any gear.thats why the mechanic said its not the tranny, it doesnt slip all the time.

sounds like your tranny is slipping from second to third. Looks like the solenoids needs to be replaced. there are TSB about solenoid replacement and a procedure to test if your tranny is slipping and whether or not your solenoid needs replacement.

Look at this TSB http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/NTB98-049d.pdf There is a chart on page three show you how you should test whether your tranny is slipping and what action to take. Although the TSB is aimed for 97 trannys, there is TSB for all 95-99 maxima's regarding solenoid valve replacement. Heres a TSB for 95 model: http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/NTB96-110.pdf

If its not the solenoid it could be the differential pinion shaft, but i doubt it.

Here is the mainsite with most of TSB for maxima. http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb...=1995&tsb=none

Hope this helps.

O and changing the solenoid isnt all that hard and part cost around 195 bucks.

The only fluid that should be in your transmission is ATF.

A 4th gen Max's tranny never slams into a gear, it shifts very smoothly up into the next gear.

So whats really going on with your tranny? Is it slipping, was it slamming or is it really shifting fine, soft and smooth as it should be?

1-2 shifts perfect
2-3 if i'm over 2500 rpm's it will jump 4-600 rpm's then go into gear. the rpm's feel like the car goes into neutral first.
3-4 same as 2-3
with overdrive off the rpm's jump less.

Get the Lucas oil out of your tranny. It's extream lubrication properties aren't helping matters. Pull the pan down, clean the magnets and make sure the pump screen is clean. Put some good old ATF back in and see how it shifts for a week or so.

a couple times i floor it and the car has a LOUD BANG, and it jolts real quick forward. i always thought it was the transmission slamming into gear, and thought i messed somethign up.
but i began thinking it was something with the brakes not engaging fast enough or something.
has anyone else had this happen?
sorry for the hijack

Tranny goddess says...

Check ur connectors first: Solenoid connectors on the top of the engine and the connector to the comp behind the center console.

RPM's running high? Check ur Throttle Position Sensor. Clean it...or buy a new one and install it urself.

Strangely ur not getting codes: which is a blessing and a curse.

A possibility? Valve fault-- control valve or solenoid value assembly. Once again you don't have any codes YET and what's interesting is that the Lucas oil actually helped you. Why would it help, unless you had issues in the tranny itself. Sounds like it may have lubed/ loosened something in the tranny like a clogged valve or some shavings that could have been lodged somewhere. Lucas is also our downfall though and I agree that you should get rid of it ASAP and refill with good ole' dexron since our cars are old and everything is worn down, lucus will result in further wear, leaks and more problems if we leave it in there. Heck my tranny is getting hauled out as we speak.

Look electrical first though: this is pic of a 94's but its the same

I had the same problem and lost my 3rd and 4th gear they went out with a BIG BANG! Don't let it go on to the point where you lose your gears. 225 miles on a 18gal of gas while driving constantly at 4000rpm just to maintain 45mph isn't fun I had mine fully rebuilt for 900 dollars after rasing a little hell with the dealership I bought it from of course!

According to the TSB directions to test the stall speed, mine went up to 2400 rpms, so I guess the solenoid in my tranny is fine? 112k miles on it.
