Hey everyone,
Yesterday morning I got to work and my driver’s side REAR brakes were smoking. I’m thinking it’s due to a sticky caliper. I’m going to check it out this weekend. Is there any write ups for replacing the rear calipers? I’ll probably just replace both of them. Has anyone done this before?
Thanks for any help!

It is most likely seized, they are expensive so I would suggest possible rebuild kit or a used one in working order. Almost $200 a piece if I remember correctly but have a lifetime warantee. I would check the pads as well while you have the wheel and caliper off.

It's nothing big to replace them, but you will have to bleed your brake system after replacing the calipers. While you're doing so, might as well bleed all four since chances are you're running on the original brake fluid for 9 years now.

You can find them for $30 or $40 here for used calipers in the classifieds, or get them at an auto parts store where they'll be around ~$100 for loaded rebuilts.

Damn, this question comes up alot and everytime i hear the same answers, no one thinks to check the handbrake. Its very likely its just the handbrake spring, or that it needs adjusting, try it first becuase its way cheaper than a seized caliper. Last year mine were smokin and finally this year i checked the brake, that solved everything, sometimes you cant even tell if the handbrake needs to be adjusted but just check anyway.

I replaced mine last year, nothing difficult if you have the right tools. The calipers were around 150-175 at autozone returning yours. You should also change the fluid, since your are going to have to bleed the system anyways.

I had the same problem. If they both started smoking at the same time it's probably your parking brake cable. The brakes would get stuck everytime I put the parking brake up so I had to pull the whells off and hammer the spring for the parking brake back into place. When I brought it to my friends shop to get fixed, he told me it was a caliper. He replaced one and that didn't fix it. Then he replaced the other and that still didn't work. So finally he figured out the parking brake cable was stuck so he refunded my cash for the calipers and replaced the parking brake cable and that fixed the problem.

Just got done with replacing my drivers' side rear calipers. I first noticed that one rotor was all rusted and flaked--I thought it was because of buying cheap no-name Autozone rotors (turns out the heat damage to the steel did that). Well, when the new rotors went in, noticed the smoking on the bad side and knew it must have been a sticky caliper. Thankfully, the reman'd parts are not that expensive. The rears were $80/$60 (after core refund) for drivers side/Passenger side respectively...don't ask me why there's a $20 difference. Instead of burning out a set of rotors/pads before their time and the extra labor, in the future I will be replacing all 4 calipers when any of my cars hits 100,000 miles.
