Quick ??- 99 Maxima ECU

I found out my computer is no good. I have a 99 Maxima SE(5-speed) and was wondering if a computer from an 99 maxima automatic would be ok as a replacement. If not what years are compatible for the 99 Maxima Ecu? Thanks for all the info guys and sorry for posting here but could not find a sticky that had the info I needed.

It would work but you'd have a cel, no performance losses though.

If you've got the immobilizer, you would have to have the ECU and key re-programmed to match eachother, I believe.

Or maybe I'm thinking of my research on the 3.5 ECU. Anyone know if the immobilizer uses the ECU to recognize the key in the '99?

if you don't mind the check engine light it would be fine, but you will fail emissions testing if you have them in TX. I would check car-part.com and call around to some local junk yards to see if anyone has them, watch out though. prices can vary widely on used ecus

I dont think it would work, the CPS sensor I believe reads different than our 4thgens, among other sensors. You'd have codes all over the place.

Not to mention the ecu would want to open up a VI that isnt there.

yea I figured they would be different so thanks for clarifying that for me....Im having problems finding a 99 maxima SE ECU(5-speed).....I found a 97 and 98 5-speed ECU only but not a 99'. I I wonder if the 97/98 would work without throwing a code.....

JR25,

Curious. How did you determine that your ecu was not working and what were the symptoms you were experiencing to make you think something might be wrong?

My check engine light came on recently. Unexpectedly, I did not get any blinking lights from the ECU unit telling me what code had been thrown. Made me think something might be wrong with my ECU box -- though do not know how one goes about know that the ECU is a problem.

There was a TSB for ecu's but that was for the 95/96s, and it didnt happen oftern.

Explain the problems you guys are having, I have a feeling its not the ecu that is the problem. I had an issue with my car, that I though might have been the ecu (timing was off and all sensors were spot on in spec), but after more tinkering car, started and it wasnt the ecu at all.

Exhaust all options before you replace your ecu.

Also if you know its your ecu. go to www.car-part.com search for an ecu over the USA, find a good one for a good price, call the junk yard and see if they ship.

At first I kept getting a code for cylinder #1 misfire and I took it in to my friends shop and we worked on it there. We checked coil packs for each cylinder and they were all good. We then checked fuel injector #1 which did not click like the rest of the fuel injectors so we knew it was bad. I ordered it from the dealer and my friend replaced it but we still kept getting the same code afterwards. Checked the coils again and they were all good. In the sticky's it does show that once fuel injector#1 goes out it probably ruined the computer already as well. My friend opened the computer and I dont know what he did to check it but stated that the computer is no good.
Does anyone know if a 97/98 Se 5-speed computer would work without throwing a code????

Did you check the spark plugs also?
Did you use a coilpack from a good cyclinder and test it on the bad cyclinder?

is your car cali spec or fed spec?
match fed spec ecu with your fed spec car, or vice versa.

there are two types of maximas, cali spec and fed spec. basically cali spec has more emissions equipment than fed. I believe its in the stickies on how to tell the difference

In the FAQS READ ME PLEASE, it tells you how to read the VIN to determine if your car is California or Federal Spec. Good luck.
