Strut recommendations?

Strut recommendations?
I need to replace the struts on my '98 SE & would appreciate recommendations from those who have done this before. I would like better handling & have heard that lowering the car by an inch or so would make a significant difference there; is this true, & if so, what struts (brand/model, etc) do you recommend I buy (& just as importantly, is there anything I should stay away from?)?
Keep in mind I don't really wanna "pimp my ride" & I definitely don't want a lowrider; I just need good solid struts & figured while I'm at it, why not make it a little more fun to drive.
Also -- any words of advice or warning on doing the job myself? I've worked on cars before, but I'm still new to it.

just replacing your struts won't change the ride height of the car. you will also want springs to go along with them if you want a drop.
as far as struts, Tokico Illuminas are your best bet. Stay away from Tokico HP's and KYB GR2 if you plan to drop.
with springs, it's all up to the ride and drop that you want. H&Rs will give a nice ride with a moderate drop. HTechs will give a light drop with a ride a bit firmer than stock. STechs will drop pretty low and give a bit harsher ride because of the loss in travel.
...also, this can all be found in the stickies too. :
good luck with your setup

Tokico Illuminas - Adjustable replacement unit. Adjusts from nice and soft, caddy like up to very firm in 5 increments.
KYB GR2 - Stock replacement unit, a very firm riding strut.
KYB AGX - Adjustable unit, rides very firm even on the softest settings. It's more suited for those who like to race or drive very agressive.
Don't lower your car, a nice strut upgrade is all you really need to give you back that factory tight or better ride control.

just because they are not the best suited struts for a drop. they tend to blow sooner than the Illuminas of AGX. like njmax said, they are good to replace the old OEM struts and have a like stock ride again.

kyb gr2s
eibach pro kit
they just gave up on me....I think mainly because I live in NYC, where potholes can be found on every street.
dont know the exact mileage

Im considering the Tokico HP blues kit with the Tokico springs....any comments on that setup? I know that only adjustable struts are recommended to lower. My concerns echo those of Jim84, just want to get rid of the 4x4 and make the car ride/handle better...without being to low and ride harsh.
