is gear oil transmission fluid??
ok, this might be a newb question, but i'm asking so i don't get stuck or do something wrong. I have a 98 i30 auto. I'm going to be replacing my driver side axle. I read the motorvate, and it said to take off the gear indictator switch. And be prepared to catch around 4.5 liters of gear oil. Is that transmission fluid or is that something different?? if it is different, what should i get?? and i'm not sure if i know how to fill it. thanks a bunch. Also, i'm pretty sure that he's replacing the passenger side in the motorvate, can anyone else vouch for that?? thanks a bunch!!!
You don't need to know about transmission fluid to replace your axle, but Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is not the same as manual transmission fluid for future reference. You don't need to concern yourself with this because you don't need to drain any fluid on the auto.
Follow the motorvate instructions for removing the driveaxle but skip the bit where he removes the park/neutral switch and drains fluid.

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is not Gear Oil. A few manual transmissions use ATF, but the vast majority use GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil.
Do you have a manual or auto?
Maximas and I30s need a GL-4 gear oil. You may have trouble finding that at the parts store - usually they only stock GL-5s. Most of us buy it mail-order so that we can get specifically the best type. (Redline MT-90, IMHO)
I do not recommend using the Motorvate instruction of removing the position sensor. It's way too fragile on most cars, and usually breaks. Remove the 12mm bolt that faces the center of the car and is close to the rear of the tranny case.

Thank you all, thats what i thought. I just wanted to make sure and not be doing something that will cost me later. Thanks a lot guys.....
Oh, I see you do have an auto.
Jack the car up and put on jackstands so that it's level or even a little higher in the back. The front only needs to be high enough to remove the wheels. Then you can pull the axle and have a drain pan to catch anything that drains out. Probably nothing.

Yeah, gear oil is the common name for an oil that can be used in either differentials OR manual transmissions...I've never seen anything that can be used for auto trannies referred to as "gear oil", usually ATF or something specifying an auto tranny. Fluid for auto tranny is lighter (thinner) than something you would use in manual trannies.
