Help!! check engine light
Help!! check engine light
Can some one please help me i have a 1996 Maxima.. My check engine light was on.. I got the diagnostic read it came back..
3rd Gear ratio incorrect: A/T... to which i believe my tranny has been slipping or Missing 3rd Gear...
and came back that my oxygen sensor is bad...
I'm more concered about the tranny b/c i dont want end up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars on repairs... has anyone else had this problem, with that type of code on the tranny?

I have a Incorrect 4th gear ratio on mine. It's been rebuilt before, but that was because of all the track time and...'improper use' of it. I suspect they didn't do that great of a rebuild, because it's back now, just not quite as badly, and I haven't been treating it badly at all.
A rebuild will guaranteed cost $1k plus, if you take it to a shop. You can get a rebuild kit for a few huntred, and do it yourself, but automatics aren't very fun to rebuild (done an A4LD, wasn't fun at all). You can get a used one from a junkyard for around $500, and install will probably only be a few hundred.
It'll last a while if you take it easy, but you'll need to replace it at some point in the future. Check your trans fluid, is it burnt and a dark color? Weird thing is mine is still bright red and not burnt, but trans still slips something bad...

No, I still had warranty through Carmax (got raped on the price for the Max though, through Carmax...wish I had known better back then). They brought it to a local trans shop that did the work. Bill came out to >$3k, good thing my deductible was only $50...
Now I do all work myself, since I'm in school for automotive, I have access to pretty much anything I'll ever need, and at discounted prices.

damn your lucky.. that's real good at least you hav the experience of knowing what might be wrong with your car....
Hmmmmm i'm scared to take my car to aamco, i want to get the problem fixd even tho it is not causing that bad of problem as far as driving!
but i guess i have no other choice then to get it fixed

Like I said, you can wait a while but eventually it will degrade to the point of virtually not being driveable.
I remember bringing mine in to Carmax, I parked it in the parking lot and went in to the service center...gave the guy my keys, he went out to pull it around. About 5 minutes later he walks back in and is like 'I can't even get the damn thing to move out of the spot, we'll have to get it towed to the trans shop'. Sure enough, they had to get a rollback to tow it down to the shop just a mile or two down the road. I was able to drive it there just fine, but most of the time giving it any gas while it was moving felt like doing a neutral drop.

Does anyone know what gets checked when they look for problems from the computer. Mine said tranny was bad as well so I had it rebuilt. Still have a engine light on then was told to try the front o2 sensor. After replacing that for 90 bucks fixed my engine light problem. Not sure if I had both problems or not but was a little ticked when the tranny rebuild didnt fix it.
