quick question about my clutch job!!!
quick question about my clutch job!!!
well,
as some of you know i had to swap my transmission and install a new clutch on my car...
well I'm been noticing this sound, and I can only think of one reason, but I want to know if anyone has had this same similar sound. to confirm or single out my problem.
(manual trans)
ok, well if I rev the engine up with out the transmission been engaged (don't move anywhere) there is no sound.
but when I start driving, around 2k rpms, there is this sound of lose metal.... it almost sounds like lose bolts (like the bushings are vibrating) this sound has gotten more often....
it used to be hear only in 4th gear, but now I can hear at around 2K in all gears-> under pressure (accelerating)....
Alos something else I notice... Initially when i first swaped averithing and put amisoil tranny fluid, the shifting of gears was like pure butter, it would easily slide right out of the gears and go into the next no problem....
NOW it alsmot feels like any other trans fluid, little hard to go into gears (any gear)- >
you can undestand the shift feeling I'm tlaking about it, by remebering how your gear changes used to feel before you put the GL-4 tranny fluid....
what i think it is is basically lose bolts in the clutch (like they got lose after instalation)
I did make sure I tighten them to torque specs.... what are the chances of them coming lose now....should I have used some kind of tread (silicon) lock thing...
what else could sound like that?

what exactly do you mean by loose metal sound? Like a scraping, or more of a jingling? The throw out bearing fork might be lose, and jiggles around on the throw out bearing. You wouldn't hear the noise with the clutch pushed in since there is pressure between the two...but once there is some slop between them, it could jiggle around and make a noise. Do you remember putting the retaining clip in the right way?
jingling....
the noise i hear is independent of the clutch pedal being pressed in or out, i only hear when transmission is engaged....
The forck initially had no dust both, but I put that in about one week later (wehn it came in the mail)
hum....what retaining clip?!?!?!?!
ooops.... well wait, what is the retaining clip....oooh the little wire that is in between the fork and the ball socket... yeha I believe it is correctly (initially it came off, but I put it back in correctly just before I instaled)
haven't checked the strut bar... I might as well...
the thing Is, I think I notice the sound been louder as days go by...meaning, it got worst..... I really think it sounds like a lose bolt... that you can only hear at the perfect vibration wave..... but then agian that wouldn't make sense (since I bold would shake no matter what)
Could it have something to do with the Rear main seal (which I replaced?)

man, I'm stumped. If the sound only happens when you are in gear, I would look towards the transmission in terms of problems. If you can hear jingling, it's a good sign of metal on metal, and it seems to be happening during drivetrain stress.
If you didn't mess with tranny internals, I would still look to the clutch job that you did as the culprit. Usually there are two retaining clips. One that holds the throw out bearing fork to the ball joint like you said, and one that holds the end of the fork to the bearings itself.
One other thing. If a bolt had in fact became loosened, it would still make noise even if the tranny was in neutral.
