Swapping a 99 Homelink visor on a 97...anyone done this??

I just found out that the homelink on my 97 Max isn't compatable with the "rolling" code features of my garage door opener. So I was wondering if I could swap out a 98 or 99 visor and have it still work. Has anyone done this before??
Thanks!

I have a 99 max with homelink it doesn't work with my rolling code garage door opener. With my 02 Bonneville with homelink it wouldn't work either and I bought a special transmitter to put on the garage door opener and it worked fine with the bonneville. I had to get the opener fixed and the guy took that special transmitter off now nothing works. I can't remember what that transmitter is but I can find out. I think if u have it any opener can be programed to it.

I do not utilize homelink for safety reasons. Now, think what can happen if your car is stolen. Most people keep their registration in the glovebox. Now a thief has your address, and access to your home through the garage door. That would make me uneasy, especially if I have a family at home.

Do 9 out of 10 of us have some sort of garage door opener in our cars? Yes. Thankfully, the vast majority of people never have a negative experience.

But, just some food for thought.

That could happen with any car most people have garage door openers in their cars homelink has nothing to do with it. Most peoples garages arn't connected to the house anyways.

Im just wondering what is the point of having a garage door opener if you don't keep the remote in your car.

I also doubt that if you stole a car you would drive to the owners house with their stolen car.

Also homelink would be safer anyways because they would have to drive the whole car to the house which is suspicious if you ask me rather then just taking a small remote and leaving the car.

I did this. My garage door also has rolling codes. The process is written out in your owners manual. Basically you program which button you want to use, then you go over to your garage door program button (same way you would program a new remote). Then you follow the same programing instructions you would do for a new remote. For mine (Overhead Door) you pust the program button (the red indicatior light on the garage door opener box with flash quickly) once then press the home link button that you are using, then this will make the light solid, after you have done that you press the home link button again, and the light on the garage door box should go out. Once this is done your homelink should work.

Ralow let me know if it works, I have a 97 also and would really like to use the homelink feature. I tried programming it numerous times, I finally got someone at Sears Craftsman to confirm what I already knew. The 97 Max homelink doesn't work with rolling codes.

How did you do it? Clear the codes? Pick the button you want to use? Push your clicker until the light starts blinking fast? If that is what you did then that is the first step to getting it to work with the rolling codes. Now you need to program your garage door box to reconize the home link signal. Its not hard you just do the same procedure that you would do when adding another garage door clicker but with the homelink.

Well, I called Homelink themselves and told them what model car I had and what model garage door opener I had and they said that 97 Max's aren't compatible with rolling codes. Trust me, I tried all the steps you mentioned but I think Nissan didn't update the homelink until 98 (just like the digital mileage counter, newer head unit, newer auto climate, etc.). So that's why I was wondering if I could swap out a newer visor and have it still work.

YES! just swap out the visor. The homelink is in the visor. Make sure before you buy a new visor that it has a little house on it. If it does it will work with rolling codes.

Where is the pre wiring located? A pillar or roof? I've looked in both to hook up my homelink but I can't find it on my 95 gxe. Maybe I have to hard wire it some how? Can anyone identify the wires running down the A pillar?

I heard that if you already have lighted mirror visors that no wiring is necessary. Just use that source for the Homelink.

If you try to program your homelink and it doesn't work even though your homelink says its programmed then you probably have rolling codes. If not just look up the make and model of you garage door opener and google it...you should be able to come up with a manual or something and that will tell you if you have rolling codes or not.
