You know that car new cars have when going fast or up a hill? That sulfur like smell from the Cat Converter? I bought a used 97 SE w/ 41K miles on it, 5spd, loaded. I know it once had a RT CAT on it, but I'm unsure if it still does. I would think at 41K miles I wouldn't have that sulfur smell. Anyone else have this, or do you think it's because the cat is RT or maybe since the stock CAT hasn't been run in a while. The smell is VERY evident too.

Maybe it's the type of gas you are using. Some types of gas have a higher sulfur content than others. Try switching brands of gas and see if that helps.

This odor may be coming from the catalytic converter, but the root cause is
an over-rich fuel mixture. A faulty oxygen sensor or defective fuel
injectors could cause the rich mixture. Also consider anything which
prevents the engine controls from going into closed-loop mode. This would
include a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor or a thermostat which is
stuck open, preventing the engine from reaching normal operating
temperature.

It seems to reach temperature, and my friend has a 97 GLE and often when following him I smell it when he bones out as well. Wonder if it has anything to do with that oxygenated gas.
