Is this possible w/ an auto?

Yes, this is another gates shifter thread but please, read on...
I have been reading some threads regarding the push down shifters for the auto (I realize this is an old topic for my old car but still...).

Would it be possible to created a gated shifter using a similar method but w/ the following changes:
1. instead of push down, it would be push-right (the entire ****er+stalk)
2. the gates would be like the letter "E" but backwards (a letter "E" actually w/ several of the "arms" for PRND21, otherwise it would be PRN) since making the "step" type gate would be harder, i think
3. since the entire stalk (rod) would have to move right I would have to make it movable at the base, somehow
4. under the PRN display mount a heavy-duty spring also attached to the rod that would pull it back into one of the "E" arms

5. but the most important thing is either one of these 2 features: 1 - fix the shifter release so that it is always engaged (almost like having the button always in - the gate would keep it from moving) or 2 - moving the rod to the right would engate the shifter release. 1 is easier but i don't know if it can hurt the car

I have a pretty good idea of how to go about doing this but my biggest problem is allowing the rod to move to the right.
Basically, the arm portion of the "E" (the locked-position) would be in the same spot as the current shifter is: upright, so I would only have to be able to move the rod to the right, the down, the the spring would pull it back into the "arm" or the "E" to switch from P to R etc...

Any input on this would be appreciated.

What would be the point?
If I wanted to modify the shifter, personally, I would remove the whole thing, cable included, and mount some solenoids instead, controlled by a little Tiptronic type stick. But it would be a complete waste of time compared with other things I could be doing.

Perhaps it would take a long time, however, I was just looking for something different. I have no intention of doing a tranny swap and I just thought this would be nice...
Anyway, if it is too difficult or impossible I'll probably just do the "push-down" version.

But if anyone else has any input, please share!

Impossible, shifter isn't made to move that way, w/o major modification and donor parts.
