umm i replaced two knock sensors in less than two weeks and its a 12mm bolt and i dont use an extension or a universal joint. You slip the wrench under the wires and i got bigger hands than most people. What I find helps me is That green sensor you unplug before that i push that braket up a little so i have clearance to go inside with the hand easier! and once the socket and wrench is on i use a piece of wood and use it as a seesaw of the engine to push the wrench to break the bolt loose!
man da hell wit dat, its a good stradegy for you, a very big pain in da *** if you ask me. I still suggest the u-joint and extension. that **** just slip right on in without you ever having to reach your hand in anywhere. and i my bolt snapped off easy as hell first try turn and SNAP! it did da trick.
I replaced my knock sensor a few weeks ago and it wasn't as easy as the instructions led me to believe. I tried using the socket and universal joint with no luck. I finally broke it loose with a ratcheting wrench and then used the socket set up to get it the rest of the way out. I still took me almost an hour to get the bold loose. Make sure you put the wrench on with as much play as possible to turn it counter clockwise. Make sure you have a good quality wrench if it has too much flex or play in the ratchet it wont work. good luck
Thanks uys. The ratcheting wrench methid was the ticket. I tried the joint and extentions, but just got the socket stuck on the bolt. Anyways, alls well, i won the infamous battle of the ****ing knock sensor.
I've been trying w/ a u-joint and a 12mm flex-socket ... Can't get the damn thing off, the u-joint just slips .. i guess i'll try the ratchet ... but for those of you that did it w/ a u-joint .. how the hell did you get the angle good enough for it not to slip?
For me, I took a 1/4" wrench and 12mm socket and places it on the knock sensor... then I think I ended up using a BIG flathead screwdriver to pop it loose... it came right off after that. My biggest problem was my hand barely fit through the opening (even after moving the solenoid away towards the drivers side of the car) and the engine was warm when I did it... so if I held my hand in the wrong spot too long, OW... otherwise, it took about 20 minutes...
Those that can do it in 5 min must have tiny hands...
