Big engine problem need help

My car has around 172,000 on it. I was driving around when I heard some type of noise then the car lost all power and oil started to come out of it. I pulled over right away. The oil was coming out somewhere near the the back of the passenger side but I wasn't sure where. I didn't try to start to car because I would do even more damage if there was no oil in it. Does anyone know what could have happened to it. This is not looking good for me at all.

If there was a loud noise and oil started coming out of it the motor is probably done. You're probably gonna need a new one, if there is a hole in the block or oil pan which i suspect, there is really no repairing it.

I just found out there is a hole in the back of my motor. Is it worth putting a new motor in a 1995? It sucks to because I just did the tranny less than a year ago and did struts 2 days ago and have a whole exhaust system on the way.

A hole, oh dear. Sounds like you have thrown a rod. Motor's scrap, basically, since you'd need to change the whole bottom end incl. crankcase.
Well, now could be a good time to consider a 3.5 swap?
If not, I'd trawl the scrapyards for a decent replacement.

Wow, first I ever heard of a Max throwing a rod. Did you keep up with oil changes?

I had a 76 Malibu Classic, blew a rod on the highway at 105,000 miles.. BANG! That was a fun day.

Damn, thats gotta suck.

You can find cheap DE's for ~$300. for install I'd see if any org member in your area is willing to do it/help. You'd save the most that way.

You could go DEK, for a little more, and a nice power gain

I cant tell from the pic where that is exactly. Probably I just don't recognize where it is.

Id be tempted to just buy another beast. Hopefully one with less miles.

Unless you can live without a car for a while and want to do the work yourself, Id say not worth it. Just to replace my rear main seal which is about 1/2 the work your looking at and minus the engine, the stealership wanted 1200. The local Garage was 600 + parts. I dunno Id say a Grand easy plus the engine.

I found a motor from a 1998 with 67k on it. It is going to cost me $300. Is that a good deal and will everything match up ok?

Everything will match up. And $300.00 is cheap for a motor with that little miles. Get it done.

yep, mine threw a rod too, and I'm not hard on my car either. I was just going 75 mph down the highway for about an hour and then it just randomly exploded.

A motor for $300? That sound incredible. with 67,000 miles? How much to install? That's what you need to know now.

Some of the vacuum lines my not be the same. Takes pics of everything if you can, it'll help when putting it back together. It can be done in a weekend if your patient. Save your old motor, you'll be able to polish some pieces and sell parts off of it to off-set the cost of the swap.

I am also wondering about other things that can make this happen, other than bad up keep.

from the picture this seems to be right behind the oil pan...judging from the sensor i'd say left hand side behind/above the oil pan.

I'm curious to know as to what would cause this?

If the stealerships charging you 300.00 for a motor with 67k on it, more then likely there going to want atleast a grand to install it! !

If I were you I'd buy a new engine and get documentation of the installation just incase you want to sell the car.

Probably 12 or 15 hours labor by the book I think.

$500 for install + a $300 motor is a good deal, definately do it.

That hole btw is on the rear of the upper oil pan, you can see the black lower oil pan and oil pressure sensor on the right side, the big brown thing on the top of the pic above the hole is the passenger side axle support bearing and bracket.
