Will 5th Gen Rearview Mirror (Compass/Temp/Auto Dim) work in 4th Gen?

Can't search and don't see it on any of the Stickies.

I'm thinking about getting the 5th Gen Rear View Mirror to retro fit it into a 4th Gen (as well as another non Nissan car) but first have a few questions first about the mirror.

1) Do all 5th Gen and up come with the rear view mirror that have Compass/Temp/Auto-Dim built in?
2) If I were to buy the mirror, is there something else (device/sensor) that I would need to make these three features work or is everything built into the mirror?
3) Has anyone done this?

Thanks.

To answer your questions:
1) Not all 5th gener's come with all 3 features, some with auto-dim, some with auto-dim and compass, and some with all three (the 5.5 gener's have the temp. in the cluster).
2) As far as sensors involved, there is none unless you buy an "aftermarket" brand mirror where you have to install a temp. probe sensor for the temp. display. As far as the compass, it's built into the mirror, and you must calibrate by driving in a circle for about a minute. Again, as far as I know, the 5th gener.'s don't have the temp. in the mirror because the 5.5 gener's have the temp. on the gauge cluster as well as the ambient display in the auto A/C for all 5th gener's.

Thanks for info.
I can do without the temp display so if I wanted the compass and auto-dim, they are built into the mirror, correct? The only thing I would need to do is wire it for power? These are the two primary things that I wanted anyway; the temp would be nice but can do without. TIA!

Yes, the compass is built in. Just need to connect power and ground.

about the ambient temperature thing, just get a climate control unit from a 1999 maxima they have the ambient button and are identical to ours i just dont know why we didnt get it. if you look on your climate control unit with a flash light you will see in the screen AMB and the button is in between the temperautre down buton and the re-circulate button.

Here's a pic of mine:

It's pretty cool - I just (ironically) hate the auto-dim feature. I love the compass, temp display and map lights.

That almost looks like mine, too. Except, mine also has a UV display that measures UV rays, rating outside. Pretty cool.

Nice Mixxmax. Is yours aftermarket or is that a 5th gen. OEM? If it is AM, is it made by Donelly? Mine is. How much was yours? Mine was $250 back in the day but I think they are $200 now. I like how yours has the display below and centered. I refused to get one of those unsymetrical mirrors with the display on the mirror itself.

Thanks. It's an aftermarket one. It's waaaay better than the Nissan stock ones because of the many features it has. I got it on ebay. I'm not sure of the brand name, though. It's definitely not Donelly. The only thing, though, you have to run sensors for the temp and UV display which were all included in the package. Well worth the investment I think.

How did you run the temp sensors? What's the price range? More than about one-fifty?

The temperature sensors should come with the mirror if it has that function. If it doesn't, you can buy aftermarket ones for about $20.00 or so on the internet. They are usually universal and work for any mirror with temp. displays. All it is, is a probe that you have to mount near the bottom inside front bumper and run two wires back up to the mirror.

Mine came with the temp. probe as well. But since my '99 electronic climate control already has ambiant temp. display, I ran my probe inside the cabin. So now I know the temp. inside and out of the car! Where do you run the UV probe? Mixxmax, you have now ignored the question twice but I'll try again: How much was your mirror? I'm all for features but what exactly does one do with "UV information"? Doesn't seem too useful. Does yours have map lights as well? Some of the Donnely mirrors have cool features like Homelink and I think I remember seeing a tire pressure monitor too! But none have it all, if you want that stuff you lose the compass and temperature. Fun toy.

Oh, sorry. I thought I answered what you wanted to hear. I won the mirror on Ebay for about $65.00. The seller usually starts the auction at $1.00 for one day or so, and it sells, because people bid like crazy on these mirrors. (I'll try to find the seller). As far as the UV indicator, all it is a added feature on the mirror that displays the UV condition outside to warn the driver or other people of the possibility of skin cancer if sun block is not used. This feature is not all that important, but useful information, though. The UV sensor probe is mounted inside the license plate bolt. As far as map lights on mirror, no, not on mine. As far as the temperature probe...Yeah, I had to run a seperate sensor because when I had a previous mirror with temp display I had tapped into the "ambient" wire on my auto A/C unit. But, when I installed this new mirror, the ambient wire connection did not work for this mirror. All in all, this is a great mirror and is one of the best ones I have seen (except the ones with "homelinks", of course).

Give us the name of the seller!!! $65 is kewl with me (I was afraid it was going to be ~150-200 like the Donnely) especailly since I want to put one in a convertable (UV indicator)!!!

Seller would be great too! Can the model from ebay tap into my 98 SE ambient temp wires?
