GLE rev limiter thing

I have a 96 GLE, so I assumed that I didn't have a limiter. I took the car up to about 120, and all of a sudden the revs dropped and I stopped getting power, just like a governer would do, which annoyed me. Later that day I tried again, got the same result, but kept my foot on the gas. The rpm's came back, and I was able to pass 120 easily until the car maxed out at ~145 or something. What the hell was the drop in RPM's. It happens every time.

Maybe it's a sign to tell you not to put your life (and others) at risk.

It's not a rev limiter it's a speed limiter.

I tested it out because there was some confusion as to whether it was a GXE or a GLE. The guy I bought the car from said it was a GXE, but the code under the vin says its a GLE, so I wanted to find out. I went just over the top of the speedo, so it was ~145. It was around 3 AM, and not a single person was on the road. The fact that I hit the 'limiter' makes me think its a GXE, but then I was able to pass it. Makes me think that I have an ECU issue or something (besides a limiter) Any ideas?

I was going down the busy L.A. traffic one day, cars everwhere. I thought I would hit some top end. I floored it and when I got into 8th gear I noticed I was at 173.6 mph. I thought my car had a rev and speed limiter but I guess not. I have a GXSE, so I don't know if that matters...

I thought I did know the trim was. The guy I bought it from was a retard who knew nothing about cars, so he told me it was a GXE. I later figured out that it was a GLE, meaning no limiter.

This has happened to me before, but i believe the culprit was the fact that i didnt have that much gas....Usually when i try to mash in high RPMs like that when im right above E but considerably below quarter tank, it will stuter like that...

You should not worry about it.. I mean really think about it, how often are you going to try to max you car out? As far as I know our cars don't have speed limiters, rev limiter is 6500rpm.

I was just thinking that if my ECU was messing my air/gas mixture up or some other general error then I would be losing horsepower everywhere.

your car is a GLE ... an implied automatic transmission. Take overdrive off before the car shifts to 4th. In other words, redline that ***** till right before the rev limiter and you won't have that problem at 120 MPH because you will arrive in 4th in the higher powerband
