And EMT stands for Emergency M edical Technician. I was an EMT, but am now a paramedic. There are different levels of EMT, with EMT effectively being the bottom and paramedic being the top. EMTs can use the automatic defibrillators and use about 3 drugs. As a paramedic, I can use a defibrillator, administer many different drugs, intubate(put the breathing tube in someones windpipe), start IVs, use ventilators and some other cool stuff. As I put it once who asked me how being a poaramedic was, its boredom(the downtime) interrupted by moments of sheer terror. Having someones life directly in your hands is quite a rush, but in situations like this you come to appeciate just how precious life is. I actually had a guy die, I shocked him and then he sat bolt upright and started talking to me. By the time we got to the hospital he kept talking about how I had saved his family and he thanked me profusely. Its moments like that that make it all worth it. As for driving the Maxima vs. being a paramedic, they are two completely seperate things, but I love both immensely. I also love my ambulance almost as much as I like my car. Ford's PowerStroke is just as sweet sounding as the VQ.

As far as my question is concerned, I actually thought that you were driving the EMT and was wondering whether you had more of a rush feeling driving your Max or coming down the road driving an EMT truck (?) with the sirens on. Since you're a paramedic though, I take it that you don't really drive, but take care of people inside.

Oh, I drive all the time too. In NYC, an Advanced Life Support Ambulance (paramedics are advanced)has to have 2 paramedics in it, one drives, one 'techs'. I can do both. It is quite a rush driving in the city, but there are too many emergency vehicles and people tend to cut off ambulances with no problems. I usually work the overnights, so most of the idiots that drive are home sleeping. Also work in Westchester County, but only one person has to be a paramedic there, the driver HAS to be an EMT. There are no such things as ambulance drivers anymore.
