Just a thought, what if I had a stripe sunroof?

Just a thought, what if I had a stripe sunroof?

I had a thought, I just found out that ALSOUSA99MAXIMA actually manually installed his sunroof, which I have been thinking about doing on mine, atleast its a thought that I am entertaining for now.

I somewhat like the new maxima stripe sunroofs. I was wondering what effort and resources would be needed to install a sunroof (normal one), and also if it is anyway possible to put in a stripe sunroof from the newer maximas on my 99. Would I have any obstacles putting in the strip sunroof?

[Edit: good thing for me, I don't have any sunroof now, and so I can go either way]

It's not called a "stripe sunroof".

These are real easy to do as long as you have a pretty sharp can opener.

Unless the shop is really good, installing a sunroof usually isn't a smart idea.

Notice how much bigger the 6th gen roof is compared to our 4th gen. If you want the sunroof to retract back, you'll obviously need roof area to conceil the glass as it retracts into the roof. I don't think this is doable to a 4th gen.

Lookswise, the 6th gen sunroof is just weird looking to me IMO. I prefer the conventional style but again, that's just me.

well the 6th gen "stripe roof" doesn't retract so it's pretty much just for looking through and getting extra sun light

Really??? Wow.....sux to be a 6th gen owner. I bet that adding that option to a non-sunroof 6th gen would cost $$$ yet you don't get a full benefit of a real sunroof. I would call that roof windows.

To the author of the thread, stick with the conventional one. Enjoy a sunroof that opens and retracts or tilts.

4th gen retractable sunroof is an upgrade compared to the 6-th panoramic sunroof.

Wow, I didn't know that either, that just really sucks.

Another reason why the newer gen maximas are as good as the older ones. :-), i might be biased though.

Well, it was a nice thought though if it were retractable, otherwise I agree the 4th gen roof is far better.

Tis a shame.

The "sky light" moonroof came standard, and the tilt/slide sunroof was optional.

Ok facts straight: its called SKY VIEW like Fr33way said. Secondly, I wouldnt let anyone but the factory install a sunroof on my car. Third: sky view sucks, stick with the conventional sunroof. Fourth: If your 4th gen doesn't have a sunroof sell it and buy one that does, dont attempt to have one installed. I'm done. For now.

if you wanna go all out. You can have a sky roof installed. Get a small one so that it'll retract sideways..-= ). Of if you're really creative, make one that splits in the middle so you can have a bigger one. But honestly, its not worth the hassle of getting a sunroof. I know it sucks but hey, you can spend $2000 somewhere else.

I had one in every car I had so far, and I miss it now. Its probably cuz of the sunny weathers here in cali.

It seems like alot of peeps are advising against it b/c the workmanship can really mess things up if it isn't done too well.

I will have to think about it, most probably i won't do it b/c it is too much to worry about and not worth it. But I think it would be interesting to see how it would look afterwards if one is actually done properly.

From my understanding there really isn't an issue doing it except for the part of actually cutting off the roof (which is admittingly unnerving).

Thanks.

Putting a sunroof in in a max that didn't come with one, IMO it's kind of a waste.
First they have to cut it perfectly, (if they screw up you go leaks)
Second you have to get a drain hose from the spaces between the roof incase you get water in there.
Third if it isn't prewired, you have to get wiring through.
Also it is going to cost 2000 or so as someone said earlier. Rather get a 5spd swap with that money.

If you do, do it good luck.

there really only around $800 or so I believe...my first car, a 91 max, came with an aftermarket moonroof that was installed by a dealer recommened place by the previous owner. I believe he got that, black leather, and a spoiler installed for $1200 or so, but that was 10 years ago. The thing never leaked and never acted up and I had the car for over 2 years. I think as long as the installers are experienced and knowledgeable, you shouldn't have a problem with leaking.

The Dealership In Las Vegas Wanted $1800.00 To Fix Mine. That's Just To Fix It! If You Do Have A Used Sunroof Installed, Make Sure You Spend The $60.00 And By The Sunroof Repair Kit And Install It Before You Have The Shop Do All The Work. It's Pay Them Now Or Pay Them Later. It The Beat $60.00 You'll Ever Spend.

Is that shop off of DI? I think its called Coach or something like that. I took my other 95 SE there once when the factory sunroof seized and wouldn't retract back. It was a weird thing because it had been working fine up until I moved to Las Vegas...must be the heat. I had that car for 3 yrs before moving to Vegas. I ended up trading the car in for a truck. Now I'm back in LA with another 95 SE.

Al's sunroof looks factory.. can not tell the difference! I have seen it in person. It only cost $50 for the entire assembly, including rails and headliner, from the boneyard. His boy cut it perfectly, and said that aside of that it bolted right in. Nissan is good for prewiring, so it may be already wired and simply cut, plug and play. His works perfectly and no leaks.. looks exactly like factory. I didnt realize he had it installed after the fact, at first..

Al - let me know if yer boy wants to do another one, as we discussed. I am definately down with putting one in my car.. if we get enough interest here, maybe he can make some side money installing them! I'll show mine as an example if he does it..

awww your making me blush!! j/p It was pre wired
And yes, I went to jacks auto salvage in bristol and I got the entire sunroof assembly, plus the slider(shade, whatever its called) and the headliner, its very inexpensive if you can have some one do it! But the key is finding someone who can do it right, my boy had been cutting and welding **** for as long as i can remember, and he has also done a rag top sunroof on my other friends pick up, so I know that he was capable of doing it, by no means am i telling anyone that it is a cake walk! or recommending you do it your self with out some kind of fabricating experience! It took him 2 afternoons 2 do it and when he cut the roof i was not even able to be in the same garage.

DJ, I forgot to ask him because well .........you know why. But i should see him Friday or Saturday and i will run it past him. I really don't think he will to to many because he has alot on his plate with his job, and his mini truck, but he might do it for you. but either way i will give you a call and let you know. I will see if he will make up a diy 2.!

Also I will post some pics for you guys to look at

Al

Off topic but amusing.

A friend of mine had a sunroof on a 86 corolla and it would always leak...one day i went to his house and he was standing on the roof of the car welding it shut. It never had another leak.

DJ whats up, my boy said he relay doesn't want to do it because if god forbid he fu(ks up, he doesn't know you or hoe you would react. Which is stupid because i would have killed him if he screwed it up, I think the real reason is because he is puttin bags in his truck and does not feel like doing it so i will stay on top of him until he is done with project and ask him again.

also i have been busy but i will take pics of sunroof today
