rewiring OBDI to OBDII

I recently failed my NJ inspection due to lack of a working OBDII connection. There doesnt seem to be enough wires hooked up to the plug and it gets no power. I've always got a diagnostic test via my OBDI plug but i guess theres a new law so any car 96 and up must have a working OBDII. My question is does anyone know if it can be rewired? or if there is some type of an adapter that can convert it?

Your car does have an OBII. All cars manufactured in the U.S. 1996 and up are all required to have OBII ports. Even my 1995 had OBII even though Nissan built it in 1994. I'm not sure what you're talking about.

wait a min, I thought all 96 and up cars are equiped with OBDII and no OBDI. Also ever since 96 there has been a law requiring to use OBDII reader for emission control. If I'm mistaken please correct me.

Plus how are you able to use your OBDI reader?

It's not a new law. All A32's are OBD II.. Nissan was a year early with the A32... as it was, is and has been OBDII since 95.

sorry if i didnt post it before, but my max has both plugs. When i took it to some shops the would tell me my ECU is dead(which was nonsense) but apparently when i look on the back of the OBDII plug are only a few wires hooked up to it. I must have gotten the car that way. What doesnt make sense though is how I passed inspection 2 years ago as the DMV claims they used the OBDII back then. The OBDI connector is still working whenever i take the car to the dealership, or to my uncles shop in NY, where they use a Snap-On diagnostic that has an OBDI adapter on it. Hope this clears up any confusion

I hate to bust your bubble, but there is no such thing as an OB1 connector in your car. What and where exactly are the ports you are referring to? There is an OB2 port right underneath the dash near the driver's kick panel. And then there's a CONSULT port near the center console on the floor on the front passenger's side. Is it likely to whatever shop you took it to hook the scanner on the front passenger's side? If so, that is not an OB2 port. That is Nissan's CONSULT port where they can monitor the car's performance.

maybe I have been refering to it as the wrong name. But regardless, i am refering to the white plug on the driver's side underneath my dash. That plug, i believe(correct me if im wrong, is and OBDII) is the one that most shops and the DMV hook there computer up to. It seems that only 4 wires are connected to that plug, and the rest are connected to a plug located inside of my fuse panel. The dealership faxed a copy to my local DMV saying "a 1997 nissan maxima only accepts OBD1". Not saying I am right or you're wrong or anything, just trying to understand whats going on which is why i came to the org with this, Also I didnt have this problem 2 years ago during inspection. I hope this also can clear up any confusion.

Can you take a pic? Most OB2 connectors are white with a 16 wire pin hookup. But not all manufacturers use all 16 pins/ports. In fact, my 2k only uses 10 of those 16. Your '97 should also be somewhat close since it's a Nissan. I'm trying to understand why you have wires going elsewhere. A close-up pic will help clear things up.

Yes, they do. I bought a brand new '95 Max in the summer of 1994. It had OB2 in it. Nissan was ahead of the game when it came to OB2 computers. Their '95 models proved this. It wasn't until late 1995 when all cars 1996 and later manufactured in the U.S. had to be OB2 compliant.

the plug behind the fuse panel cover is the consult port, the obd port is right below the fuse panel were the plastic ends. its white.. all A32 maximas are obd2 you cant have both..and i dont see how wires could just become disconnected like that. the only thing i can see is it they pushed to hard to plug it in and snapped the board or something.

2 all reading the post, my fault for mis-using the term OBDI for the consult port. I was just going with the flow of what I heard the shops and dealership talking about.

96blkonblkse, your right, they all have obd2 and "should" work but I cant seem to get a reading out of mine, I will snap some pics with the digi and show how many wires are connected to it.

NmexMAX, i've gone to a few dealerships and shops and i hear it all. I believe and trust the word of you guys here on the org over thiers, which is why im on here asking. Im just fowarding the information I hear. But yea, pics to come in the morning
