Does it throw somesort of code, or is it just a matter of whether or not your power/mileage is going bad?

 

you can attach a guage between the fuel filter and the hose to see if the fuel pressure is within spec. If its low than you could change the fuel pump for preventive maintanence.

 

It won't throw a code specifically for the fuel pump, there may be a code for excessively low fuel pressure but I don't believe there is.

Typically as fuel pumps go bad they get louder and louder until they finally just go kaput. Leave her running, and go take the backseat bottom cushion off (pops right off in a few seconds) and see if the fuel pump is very noisy. There should be some whirring or other quiet noises (after all, it is pumping fuel) but nothing very loud. If you can hear it easily with the rear seat cushion still on, then I'd replace it soon.

What makes you think your fuel pump may be going bad? Symptoms?

I can hear it whirring when I get close to the rear tire. I might go ahead and change it myself this weekend.

 

The car will feel hesitant/ or struggle to increase speed. Also will make noise like pmohr said. Many times it will become louder as it dies and will not throw a code. But the best way to check IS by a Fuel pressure gauge. I check mine after or before the fuel filter, its the easiest spot. Keep in mind, the fuel pump does make a small whine.
