Transmission swap

I have a 96 Maxima and was thinking about switching it from auto to a 5spd, has anyone done this? How much work is involved?

there have been a bunch of people who have done it, me included. The question would be, how confident are you of your work on your car? It's an involved process, and requires alot of work, but nothing too daunting. There's a writeup on vqpower.com, which has a parts list, and procedure for the entire swap. It's also linked here in the stickies.

if you have any questions, PM me, i'll be glad to answer them.

Thanks,
-Freddy

...a lot, it might not be something u want to try if you dont ever read up on here..which im making that assumption since you have been on here for so long and dont know the answer to that frequently asked question..then again u may know a lot about mechanics and working on cars..but then y would you ask that ? in here..odd only 1 post and u started a thread? I thought u had to have like 15? maybe the donation cancelled that?

I'm will be doing the 5spd swap sometime very soon. My auto is going and I need to replace it. Here the link to the 5spd swap procedures.

also not to be a thread jacker, did anyone find the 3/4 spacer for the clutch pedal assembly to the firewall? As it is quoted in the vqpower thing " Note: On a factory car w/ 5speed there is a spacer that is ¾ of an inch thick that is on the inside of the firewall. The 2 bolts that are on the clutch pedal that travel through the firewall go through this spacer, and somehow you will need to recreate it (VERY IMPORTANT!! that you get it just the right size, maybe buy the spacer from Nissan).
2.40 You can recreate it by getting big nuts that fit over these screws and using them as a spacer (or better yet, buy one from Nissan)." I went to nissan and they couldn't pull it up on their computer thing.

yeah, there is no real spacer to speak of. you have to use a butload of washers to make up the distance for the master cylinder to work properly.

I just completed the swap.. took quite a bit longer than expected had to keep running to the dealership and back to get parts i was missing..

if you're using an aftermarket flywheel (fidanza etc) make sure you get the ring gear that's bolted on to the stock maxima flywheel otherwise your car wont start! I found this out the hard way after having my tranny bolted up and everything and i had to take it down again :@ lol
