Radiator support rust out

Any one else have this potentionally dangerous condition?

On my '96 GLE, the front lower radiator support where the center engine cradle bolts to is completely rusted through.

Almost to the point where if the rust holes get any bigger I feel the engine might be able to literally fall out of the car.

Anyone hear any others complaining of this?

Might want to go out & check your car.......

There's some posts about this elsewhere. The best option in my opinion is to weld (or have someone that has the capability and ability to weld) a new section in, beefer than stock. And cut the old rust out of course and make sure it's not just going to spread underneath the repair. Mine wasn't bad so I ground out the rust, drilled some drain holes to keep the water from standing above it anymore and covered it with POR-15, restoration shops use it in their projects, great product, very durable, keeps the rust away like no other, but not the cheapest, but should be available at any body supply shop.

Sounds like a plan but I think mine is too far gone for POR-15.

Looks like this could be an expensive repair.

Google search doesnt turn up much on the subject.....

If it's too far gone, then you could have the radiator suport replaced or if you cut some of the rusted part out replace it with some stock steel, use the POR 15 or at least some form of rust protection that's better than factory paint to prevent it from happening again. I realize that's not exactly an easy task as most do not own a welder or any other equipment to do metal work, but it's cheaper than having a shop do it, there's not really an easy way out of it,,,

Details please.......

You installed a new full radiator support and it only took you one hour?

Is the support bolted in or welded in?

Or did you cut out the lower section & weld in a new piece.....

The radiator support is welded onto the frame, to safely remove it and install a new one, you would need a frame alignment rack (or at least so I've read several times around on here). But it is welded on, I searched around for a bit back when I had my accident in the max, since mine is bent behind the passenger side headlight.

Wed/Thurs I did the rear injectors and cleaned out the EGR. Then I jacked up the car a little when I was getting the air out of the cooling system - everything was fine then

Friday I drove it to work and then Sat afternoon I went for an alignment and the guy told me about it (so it broke off Fri or Sat). I'm not driving the car right now - its sitting outside with the center beam jacked up a little (hopefully, if no one stole my jack...)

Since this thread is ten years old, I doubt anyone from 2006 will reply.

ahem, nissan never did squat which left the majority of the op replacing the lower if not the whole rad support ourselves.

oem is a bit more expensive but it is the only way to go. if you would've searched, you would've found a few threads on this subject already.

I concur, go OEM, don't make the mistake I made and go aftermarket and then still have to go in there another time!

Go OEM (less headache and better IMO) or reinforce an aftermarket support with steel one time!
