Fuel Door Release Latch
Leaving the gas pump last night and noticed my fuel door wouldn't latch. Well, turns out the plastic 1/4" piece that holds it broke off. The broken piece was still sitting there, so I super glued it back on last night and tried latching it this morning, but when I turned the first corner out of my neighborhood, I heard it pop open again. Any one else had this happen? I tried searching and found nothing. What did you do to fix it? I called Courtesy and it sounds like they have a replacement for $20. Hopefully this works, cause I am getting sick of little **** breaking all the time.
I was at the gas station the other day, and I had the exact opposite problem... my fuel door wouldnt open! After fiddling around and pushing in/down on the fuel door itself, i finally got it to pop open.... now i have to fiddle around with it every time i get gas...I cant tell what its getting stuck on. Anybody else have a problem like this?
It's very easy to install yourself. They won't replace the entire cable. The lock portion is seperate from the cable. All you need to do is get in the trunk and push the lock out from the inside. You may need to squeeze the clips. THen pull it out some and you will be able to tell how the cable comes off.

Yeah, I need to go pick up the part. I was thinking I would do it myself. Is it just the latch or is it the entire cable assembly? The only part broken on my car is the plastic latch.

In case any one else needs to do this. The Nissan part number (if you have keyless entry, he said it does matter) is 78826-01L01. The part cost me $20 from Courtesy Nissan. Took five minutes to install. Step by step instructions on my '95,
1. Pop your trunk.
2. remove two plastic clips holding trunk liner in place on the left (driver's) side of your trunk and pull trunk liner back so that you can see the inside of your rear quarter panel (metal)
3. Reach your hand back in behind the metal trunk support and the quarter panel, until you feel the cable for the fuel door latch, follow the cable to the latch mechanism, grab the cable at the end (nearest the latch mechanism) and push it forward and then pull it to your right (towards the interior of the trunk) this will release the cable from the latch mechanism.
4. push the old (broken) latch mechanism out by applying pressure with your hand from behind, it will pop out towards the entrance to your gas tank.
5. slip the new fuel door latch mechanism into place, then reach from behind (inside the trunk) and reconnect the cable to the new assembly.
6. Shut the fuel door and test to make sure that the latch now releases the fuel door correctly.
7. Drink a beer to celebrate! And feel like a genius for completing the easiest possible repair for our cars!
Cheers!!

Fixed mine this morning. Thanks for the perfect instructions.
The only addition I would make is that there were four plastic clips holding the trunk liner in place.
Having a door panel popper tool for these types of tasks has been a godsend.
It took me just over 20 minutes to figure out how to get the thing replaced.
It's great to keep this car from looking ghetto, even though she's nearly 21!
