Big Problem!! Need HELP! Tranny Experts!

Ok guys, here's what happened.....
2 nights ago......
was going about 70mph on 4th gear, then traffic picked up after a hill so i downshifted to 3rd gear and slammed on my brakes....
ABS Kicked in after coming to about 30mph i pushed in the clutch and tried to get it out of gear but it wouldn't come out.....

My Shifter is stuck in 3rd gear and it will not come out!!!

now, i managed to get my car parked at a parking lot but i was driving on 3rd gear the whole time.
Car still drives, but i have to launch on 3rd gear and thats it.

Can anyone Help me out on this?.....What seems to be the problem?

There are a few possibilities.

1) your shifter has a problem. To check this, lift the front of the car and check out where the shifter rod meets the tranny. I would just unbolt it there and ensure you can move the shifter from inside the car.

2) Take a rubber mallet and *gently* try to tap the striking rod back in toward the transmission. This is manually moving it from 3rd to neutral. If the car passed #1, then you will find that it won't want to go back into neutral. DO NOT FORCE IT.

3) Remove the 2" plastic position sensor from the tranny. Be careful to not break it since it's brittle plastic, and have a 5qt pan underneath to catch all the gear oil. With this sensor out, you should be able to peek in with a flashlight and look at the shifter gates. You are looking for anything which might be stuck or jammed in there, and looking for broken pieces of metal in the gear oil that might suggest there is stuff floating around that's capable of jamming the works. If you're really lucky you'll see the thing jamming the shifter and remove it.

4) Drop the tranny and take it to a tranny shop for repair. If 1-3 don't solve it, I think you have an internal tranny problem.

Does the clutch pedal have pressure? If not, check the clutch lines. My friend's clutch pedal went dead on him on the freeway too and it turned out his clutch line was leaking. Replaced it, and bled the fluid and everything worked again.

Why do i feel like these cars tend to break during abrupt near accident braking?

Whoa. . . dont go that far, just check the fluid levels, search the lines for leaks.
If there are no leaks give the lines a bleed anyway, see if that will get you out of 3rd.

I had to launch from a stop in 2nd, not bad but 3rd must be a nightmare.

Dont give up yet.

I have no idea why you feel that way. I don't feel that way at all.

Yeah it is a nightmare...
So MDeezy, what happened to your tranny anyways? was it just because of a leak or did you have to re-built your tranny?

i just talked to the guy this morning, i told him that my clutch line was leaking and he told that has nothing to do with my 3rd being stuck..... Man, i hope he doesn't rip me off.

He's correct. Disengaging a gear does not require the clutch. It will increase the resistance a little bit if the car is rolling, but it's not required.

Peter, if it's a leaking clutch line, you can get an SS line for around 30 shipped somewhere in the classifieds/GD forum.
