I hate exhausts with a passion...

Well, my GF has had a nasty exhaust leak for a while and I dug in to take care of it today.

Basically, I installed a new Y-Pipe on her 99 SE. Upon removing the bolts from the the rear exhaust manifold, the whole stud came out (2 of them BTW). What makes it even better is that it's stripped. YAY!

I'm 99% sure that the threads in the manifold itself are damaged, but I'm going to go against my better judgement and see if I can get some new studs to thread in properly.

Anybody know what these go for at the dealer (I need 2 BTW)? How much is a replacement exhaust manifold (Cali-Spec)? What would labor run? Exhausts suck, and so do hand tools.

btw, NEVER again will I work on an exhaust.

If the exhaust manifold is stripped, it is.

That is a picture of the better looking stud.

edit: I will give that a shot though. Thanks.

the nissan in springfield, ma had the studs for $6 each (stud and bolt) I bought a whole set (6 total).
trey getting those striped fixers (your mechanic should be able to show you how tohey look, and if you know then you cna probably borow it)

it basicaly cuts the bent metals that are not in place anymore....If i were you I would just ask a mechanich to do that.... (cheap place, not a chain company)

just use a good amount of anti-seize when installing the new bolts, make it easier down the line.

Plus the 1st time try with good brake bar or impact wrench before trying to take it off with your 3/8th ratchet and you strip half the bolt.

The studs aren't too expensive from the dealer, maybe a couple bucks each. Since you say that it's stripped, I'd get a tap and chase the threads in the manifold to see if just cleaning out the threads helps.

Same thing happend to me when I put in my Y-Pipe. I just put new studs in there. Make sure you get the special socket from AutoZone to tighten up the studs.

Look, if the holes really are stripped, just stick em back in there, hammer them in if necessary, and run some brass braze in there, they'll never move again. You need a hotshot with a gas welding torch. No prob.
Or if that doesn't appeal to you, can you get a drill in there, one with a right-angle head, and drill the holes out to the next size up, then retap. Go to a specialist fastener shop and get studs that have two separate diameters, or alternatively, get someone to make replacement studs with the two separate diameters, on a lathe. Out of stainless...
Or if you want to do a cheap and cheerful fix, you might find a helicoil to do the job.
No need to PANIC!

Advance sells exhaust manifold studs and bolts. Not sure if you will find the right size though. In the HELP! aisle.

i pulled the stud out like that before, i think its about $7 a stud. and you would need to get new nuts. shouldn't be hard to rethread everything. but the lack of space gets annoying

ignore what i said sleep>me.i was thinking were the ypipe connects to the manifolds.well get 6(i think) replacements to avoid future headaches.also get the thread inserts to fit inside the holes before rethreading the holes.

for space remove the axle(if you have the tools)

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Between summer classes and work I don't have the time to handle it at the moment. Hopefully tomorrow I can drop it off at a muffler shop.

i feel your pain about working with exhaust man. when i had my civic, i had bought a new header and downpipe. well when it came, i was eager to put it on.....the downpipe had to come off first in order to get the header....well as i was trying to break a bolt free, the head of the bolt broke off, leaving the stud inside, and causing me to fracture my hand. well this left me no other choice but to cut it off....i was putting a new one on anyway so it didnt matter. i finished to job before going to the hospital to get my hand x-rayed tho hahahahaha.

exhausts can be a B#%$& to work on
