torn cv boot

i just noticed today both my front cv boots are torn, its probably because i had my drop installed yesterday (h-tech springs, tokico HP struts). if i just order cv boot kits for both side from autozone, and do the work myself, will that be ok??? as long as nothing has gotten inside my cv boots, it should be fine, right? thanks.

As long as there is no clicking when your fully turned to the left or right. You should be ok but there a chance you wont be. It a risk you have to take. It also depends on how long it been torn. 1-2 days and you should be ok a week or more then maybe I would be worried more.

I would get the full boots, though the work is THE WORST AND LONGEST THING YOU WILL EVER DO, It's definatley worth it. I put some split boots on my old Honda to save time and money, they still let dirt in and eventually ripped off again. Trust me, dont cheap out on this project.....oh yeah and make sure your hear no clicking at all, if you do , time to get new axels....
Good luck.....

Seriously, don't bother with the boots. You'll thank me for it later. For just a few bones more, you can replace the entire CV shaft with a lifetime warranty part. Granted, it doesn't pay for the labor, but it's just sooo easy. Here's a link in the FAQ for boot replacement. Delete half of the instructions for shaft replacement. LMK how it goes. Good luck.

edit: FYI. I had two shafts rebuilt, installed, and warrantied lifetime by a local axle shop for $160 total. For both sides. Don't be afraid to ask for a two shaft discount. It doesn't hurt to ask.

like im talking like a week.

cause i dont get paid til next week...and this week's check is already going to the insurance....

i heard wrapping it in duct tape might work for a week or something...atleast keeping the goop in and the dirt out.

First of all DON'T FREAK OUT!!!! Duct tape won't do ****, trust me. A week isn't bad, but for all you know it could have been ripped for a month now maybe longer. The longer you wait the more chance there is your tear up the axel. I really wouldn't worry about a week, but the sooner you get it done the better AND REMEMBER IF YOU HERE A CLICKING NOISE YOUR TO LATE, TIME FOR A NEW AXEL/S

Just buy remanufactured axles. They come with a lifetime warrenty. So they will be the only set of axles you will ever have to buy. Unlike if you buy the boots you may have to buy them again in a few months. There only like $60 each. So for the added cost it's less labor and will be cheaper in the long run.

Whether you get reman axles or have them rebuilt, don't do the split boot. Split boots are cheap; dirt can still get in/greese out, and you WILL at some point soon have to replace them again. Just do the job right and enjoy the ride. If you wait a week, unless your just driving hard, you should be okay. But the key is to listen to your axles if they are already clicking, its countdown time.

i was jk man, its all good. im pretty sure the cv boot kits from autozone arent split boots, so they should be good. BTW, where could i get 2 remanufactured axles from??? give me a website, i may just do that. are they easier to install than just the boots???

I just let Midas do it yesterday. A kid in my office did his and said it was easy, but when I saw the 36mm nut and necessary removal of the steering knuckle, I really didn't want to get into it. Maybe someday. So you know how it works, they give you a jacked-up estimate, you ask for a better price, and they lower it. In my case, by simply asking for a better price they took off $45 per side or $90. Sure, I still got ripped-off, but $90 less is better than nothing. I peeked under the front-end and everything looks fine to me. I had an alterior motive too--when we were negotiating I implied maybe if they pass me for inspection and give me the $90 off I'd go ahead. My front tires are iffy and the rim is dented, and they did find the rear sticking caliper.

I guess with the axles I don't want to push them to the breaking point--since the right side did not spin-out all the grease yet, maybe it could be saved and keep going a year. But I feel better knowing a problem is gone.....and this logic all hinges on the fact that the axle has to come out to properly replace the boot. Why not replace the axle while you or the shop is at it?? my.02

i think im gonna just let it go and then before i move to salt lake city in august, i will order remanufactured axles from napa for both sides and replace them myself before i move. any advice on doing the work myself?? ive never done anything near that major before, but it doesnt look too hard. i should beable to do it, i just need to find a torque wrench. and since i have to drain the tranny fluid, i will replace that at the same time.

Yes just install, their already packed with greese. Trust me its not all that simple. Its not too involved either, but just takes patience and a little time. Oh, did I say patience.
