SAFC II Tuning

I have an SAFC II coming in on wednesday, and I need some direction to get the most out of it. I'm sittin on an auto tranny ... Place Racing style custom cold air intake, warpspeed Y, magnaflow cat, UDP, drop resistor mod, and from the smell at high rpms, i'd say im running rich. I know a few of yall have this on your maxima's so help me out PLZ!!!

well what exactly do u need help with? most people just take it to a dyno tuning shop a pay $150 to get their car tuned....then they lock the settings and never touch it...until they are ready for another tune...

well basically, I'd like to keep my $150 and do what the dyno shop does myself, if possible.

If you want to save that $150....then the only other way I can think of, is to get yourself a wideband o2 sensor and a laptop...and go street tune it yourself....a wideband o2 will run you about $300.....

What if your nose isn't calibrated? And you're not running rich.. How do you know what to adjust, and how much to adjust it?

Dyno tune, or street tune, either one will cost you some money.

Do it right or go home.

Like already said meng, tuning is not something you want to ga half-**** on. I didnt even go on a tuning session. I tuned my SAFC on a dyno day when they do a low price for a bunch of people to show up. $40/ 3 runs with a/f. I did the 1st run with no correction to see where the a/f was at. Then while the motor cooled down, I did the corrections needed to get the a/f more or less where I wanted it. Then the 2nd and 3rd run were "fine tuning" corrections, like 1% higher/ lower here and there. At 4500 I was at 11.9:1 a/f stock; it was my richest point. To bring it up to 13.5:1 it took me IIRC -11% correction (just to give you a rough estimate of what the correction amount will do). STD #s, I went from 184WHP/187WTQ with the stock a/f, to 191WHP/195WTQ with SAFC tuning to 13.5:1 across the powerband.

Keep in mind, there's other factors involved in choosing "the best a/f for my car". 13.5 might not be as benefitial to your setup/ location as to me. Also timing curves should be taken into account. Our timing advance increases as we climb the powerband, so keeping the a/f at 13.5 at redline for example might be dangerous because of the higher danger of pinging due to the higher timing advance up there. I corrected that on my tuning already.

If you really want to get good advice on tuning, go to the All Motor forum.
