My car is on LSD........... VLSD.
1st off I did all the work alone. Working slowly in the driveway for about 8-9 hours over 2 days. I did the clutch not to long ago and at that time I pulled the cross member and lowered the engine and tranny down together. After hearing others techniques without touching the engine I gave it a shot. There are a few bolts that would be impossible to get to without racheting wrenches (something I didnt have last time). 2 hold the shift rod to the tranny, and a few others hold the upper oil pan to the bell housing. Taking off the cross member give access for regular sockets, which I did last time. Well it was much easier this time around. I was hoping I didnt need to pull the passanger's axle this time, but I did. Luckly the bracket and bearing slid apart easily.
Any how after filling the tranny up with Amsoil all I can say is WOW! Now my AE shift **** isnt just for show LOL. No more whirring, no more leaking MTF (Redline $$$$), no more excesive wheel spin, and so far no more wheel hop either. I had major wheel hop with the 18's around some corners. Also the car pulls nicely though the turns. Duh! So now I can hear my stock muffler insted of the constant tranny bearings. It was getting quite loud.
Another nice change is the shifter location. I have a PS STS and it was really close to the radio. Now its leaned back just where I wanted it to be.
BTW the original tranny suffered from the all to common differential bearings wearing out. I can move the whole thing inside the tranny about 1/8". Nice job Nissan.

I'm looking into replacing my 5 speed with a brand new one. Mines is starting to show wear of some carraige bearing that needs to be replace. It runs fine right now, but with time it will need replacing. How much you willing to pay?

Not quite sure yet. I'm jobless at the moment, so any money I spend comes out of savings, which is going to start hurting. Ideally, I'm trying to spend no more than 800-1000 for the entire project. All the peripheral parts I can get for ~4-600, so that leaves me pretty much 400 bucks shipped for a trans, but if shipping is more i suppose i could stretch for it. Nothing is final though, I doubt I'll even consider paying for anything until I get a job.

i keep hearing about people buying used vlsd trannies and i've always wondered how good a used vlsd would be. if your tranny is a low mileage one, cool, but in a 75k+ miles tranny, would the differential still be serving it's purpose?

if you can get a NEW one at a reasonable price go for a NEW one, i wouldn't order a used one unless I could test it or got somesort of warranty for it (3 months would be enough I suppose)
anyways what are the search parameters for a Transmission with VLSD, do I put Infiniti I30t instead on Nissan Maxima, since they come standard for those and not for Maximas...

I would love to get my hands on one... My tranny is on it's last leg (same problem you had)
Is there anything special you have to do to make it work or do you just have to replace the passanger axle and your good to go?

Just a few pix of the 2 trannys:
Stock open diff is the dirty one, duh. As you can see they are slightly different on the out side. Nothing major, but if you have a good eye you could spot it when installed.
