LUCKY DAY..... picked up sum free hids

i had to bring my cousin to the auto body yesterday to get his VW r32 repainted from a light accident when i saw a 03 maxima getting its front end completely redone from a front end collision. the owner and workers are friends of the family and i asked if he had the original headlights still and he said yea. he gave me bolth headlights bc one was cracked and the other was scratched. HID ballasts and bulbs all in great condition... they had to order new everything w the new headlights so he was like yea whatever take the old ones..
so i got home and butchered the headlights trying to get all the hardware out to retrofit it into my housing...
heres the question... the 03 headlights come w a metal sheild that surrounds the entire bulb and only allows some of the hid's light to escape. if i was to sumhow manage to put that in my housing u guys think the glare wont be as bad??? i stuck the hids in my housing last night real quick and it was EVERYWHERE! no controlled beam wutsoever..... if i was racing the baja 1000 theyd probly be great lol... i dont know if anyones done this before but if so let me know!

I'm not sure if the 03 model came with projectors but if they dont the hid's are pretty useless in halogen housings.

If you're interested i know someone who would like to purchase the ballast.

02/03 headlamps aren't projector based. They are reflective HIDs that use D2R bulbs which reduce the glare.

What gen Max do you own?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but those HID's definitely will NOT work in the halogen housing. The 5th gener HID's are reflective, meaning D2R. What you need is a projector type retrofit. If you want a quick sale and put this in the 5th gener's classifieds, you'll definitely get a buyer because there is always someone looking for a good set of ballasts, bulbs, ignitor's, etc.

They will work, but I wouldn't reccomend it. You asked about the metal shield, if you're going to use the HIDs please use this shield to reduce the glare.

If you got projectors, you would need to get D2S bulbs (D2R is what comes with the 5.5 gen Max) or convert your D2R to D2S (scrape off the "film").

Well...with our cars you have 3 options: you can get a single xenon projector and lose your low beams; you can get a bi-xenon projector and have to wire up the high beam solenoid; or you can retrofit dual projectors.

If you only want single xenon projectors and don't care about your high beams (I'm guessing you don't since you already tried these lights in your housing the way they are, which is low beam only), then projectors can be as cheap as $50/set. Bi-xenons like mine can be as cheap as a little over $100/set. That is in no way going to get you good quality ones, though. Lucky for you, though, all you need is the projectors themselves since you have everything else.

I suggest you check out the HIDPlanet.com forums for better info specifically on HIDs.

That's a pretty good deal. I think I paid in the same neighborhood for my E46 bi-xenon setup.

i would like to purchase the remainder of the headlgihts once you butcher them. if posisble? i can pick up. please let me know.

your options are to use the halogen housing that you have on the car. which requires a shield... i have 2 shields if you want them. that im using in the cefiro housing rite now. it reduces glare to oncomming traffic and gives somewhat a cuttoff.

or Projector ur headlgihts, however the bulbs that you have wont work becuase projectors use D2S bulbs. i have 2 philips d2s bulbs as well that you can use.

PS. your ballast might not accomidate the D2S bulbs i dont htink the maxima ballast accomidate it..

PM me let me know whats up?

Projectors use D2S, yes, but D2R will fit (but will not look so good or have that great of output). It is possible to scrape off the coating on the D2R bulbs to "convert" them to D2S, but I would find a write-up on HIDPlanet or something before doing that.

D2 ballasts are, for the most part, universal. D2R is just a D2S bulb with a specific section coated on it.

im not shure thell fit unless you break the little "nub" or tab that is on the base of the projector. cause the grooves on teh bulbs are at diff location for the projector at a diff location between the d2s and d2r....

alot projectors that are bought second had have them broken cause there very easy to break. there flimsy. and if they were broken you couldnt even tell and no one woulod be the wiser. but when this happens the bulb can rotate and move in position.

and the ballast the newer generation are universal. those would be the ones iwth the ignitor built into them. however the maxima used an older gen ballast that has the ignitor which is a black box that in in line between the bulb and the ballast which only works with d2r. unles a d2s bulb is modified wiht the groove.

i have 2 projectors that are BI-XENON and auxillary light that i used in my dual beam hid setup that we can trade. the reflector is what im looking for as im looking to do black housing for a 2004 max. so let me know. thanks

this is the end product.

That is true, but that's really quite simple. Some have good results converting D2R to D2S, others don't. I guess it depends how good of a job you do. In the end, I suppose for him, since he doesn't know a ton about HIDs and all that...he's probably better off buying D2S bulbs like you said.

well did u break the reflector...? i mean i jsut want the two round parts and the corner two little lights.. ican care less about the casing and glass.. jsut hte reflector inside and the two corner lights.. even the corner lgihts not that big a deal...

if those are in tact ... ill give you the projectors in trade.. there bi-xenon... and the two auxillary lights i have next to the headlight in the pics.. so its up to you ..

and wirte up.. there a dime a dozen... here on teh org. you really cant follow any write up.. u can get basic idea.. but thats it.. mounting and all that is diff for each headlight depending on teh pojectors...

and i can show give u the diagram for the wire harness so u can highbeam and all... so let me know if anyone is interested
