Help! Cv Joint Came Out While Changing Front Strut!

well I was helping a friend change his drivers side strut out on his 96 max because meineke was trying to repair his car (new front struts) and broke the top of the strut off from the bottom of the thread clean of to the top and then told him that the car has too many miles on it and its not repairable?!? so I was trying to help him and when we jacked up the car and tried too take out the strut and spring the broken strut and spring expanded (as we knew it would ) but got wedged against the outer cv boot and finally pushed the whole hub down andout toward the rear of the car resulting in the cv joint axle coming out of the trannie and now it wont pop back in and the rubber boot seems as if it has pressurized because its like shrink wraping around the metal internals of the axle please help.... will it just pop back in or do we have too take it apart?

It'll go back in. You may have to take the boot off (but doubt it) to get it to line back up but it will go. Had this happen the other evening. It'll be frustrating but you can get it.

thanx for the reply did you have too take the boot off? cause the manual says you have to get this special tool if you take off the special clamp

I did take the boot off but all that did was make a big mess. You just have to get the splines on the hole and the shaft lined up. Putting the car in neutral while lifted will help some.

sweet thanx for the tip. but if it just doesnt go in Ill probably have to take the boot off right? and buy a new clamp

did you try using a rubber mallet? line up the axle and bang it back in place hard with a rubber mallet.

You might as well just take the axle nut off and take the cv axle off. BTW You'll bee about 250 ft lbs of torque to get the axle nut off. The reason is getting the snap ring and splines to match up wile the axle is in the hub sounds like it's going to be more of a pain then it's worth. If you do get the axle off, align the snap ring so the open side is down and use some grease to center the snap ring. You may want to take it off and put the axle in to see if it lines up properly and get an idea of how deep inside the tranny it goes. Definately make sure it's seated though, if it isn't you risk alot of vibrations and possibly ruining the final drive gear on the tranny.

Exactly. You need to take the axle out all the way and make sure the splines line up with the inside of the differential and then pound the axle back in. The idea is to make the axle into its own self sufficient hammer. Use the end to ram the other end into the tranny... it will work. You might want to have a friend lay on his back help stabilize the axle as well.
