now, is this mod worth doing? i mean, i know the stock intake system is pretty restrictive but does this boost performance enough to make me want to spend the time doing it? or is it kind of a just for looks type of deal?

 

HAI = hot air intake. youre sucking hot air off the block, which is why i went back to stock. no the stock setup is really not that restrictive, in fact its one of the more efficient stock setups ive seen. if you want to sound cool and lose power then hack it.....

good choice man, i could really feel the car start to bog down as the summer months have arrived so i decided to fix the hole...... I could definitely tell a difference and could finally chirp 2nd again (I hacked a big hole haha) but it did sound good when i had it

 

I had one on for a week or so, felt the power loss. Sounded cool though.

 

The restriction on the stock intake it at the snorkle. For 97+ owners there's a mod you can do to overcome that restriction. There is a resonator box under the battery tray. It's a sealed box, but it can also be a source of additional intake air if it's modded correctly.

Remove the box and drill holes in the side that faces the inner fender. There is cool air down there and your intake can take advantage of that. The elbow that branches off just before the snorkle will pull air from that source when there is any restriction from the snorkle opening under heavy throttle. There is no noticable sound from this mod, no loss of power and the best part is nobody can see it, it looks totally stock yet provides more air flow for the stock intake system.
I've had this mod on my car for quite some time and do feel like it allows my car to breath better when I open up the throttle. Keep a clean paper air filter in the system or use a K&N and enjoy a better flowing stock intake.

 

I've also decided to leave the intake stock for now. Stock intakes seem to have a minor ram air effect and are meant to take in cooler air than a cone filter. Mine is totally stock but the filter gets dirty quickly with gravel/bugs/debris since I do so much highway driving. To me, that means that air is being forced in there well enough despite how narrow the snorkel appears to be. Also, the place where the snorkel attaches to the box isn't airtight......if the engine was starving for air it could pull it in from that joint anyway.

 

Since when is this a 97+ only mod? My dads 96 and my cousins 96 both have the resonator under tha battery.

 

who told you the intake system is restrictive? the stock system is probably one of the best made for our cars.

 

Then maybe it's only the 95's.

 

I think my 95 has the resonator under the battery, but its disconnected. (Its possible that my car has 96+ parts so that could be why I have it and no hoses are connected to it)

 

im putting back in my stock airbox....chirping second FTW ....plus i notice the powerloss and all i do is use more gas anyways....i want my car a little quieter. Trust it's nice at first but just get a nice exhause like OBX or somein if you want a deep tone.id be putting mine back in today but it's raining :=\

 

i can chirp second easily and i have had a hai since that was like the only mod for our cars besides exhaust. it may make the car slower, it may make it faster, but how much ever it is plus or minus in either direction it really is inconsequential when compared to the dynamic driving characteristics of most drivers. i say if you like the noise then do it, if you dont care for the noise then there is really no point...
