Hard to shift

HARD Shifting
Hi guys, i have a problem with my 1997se. It is really hard to shift when at higher rpms, but when the car is idling the shifting is normal. My car is a manual. I'm not sure what is wrong, but it just seems like everytime I try to shift it is like I have to really slam it into gear. Thanks in advance, Greg

Probably damaged synchros or dog teeth. It's hard to diagnose without removing the tranny and taking the housings apart. If you can remove the tranny yourself, as tranny shop should not require more than an hour of labor to open the tranny and give a diagnosis and estimate.
Given the cost of rebuild + replacement of these parts, you may be best off buying a recently rebuilt tranny.

Ironically, I had trouble shifting this morning on the way to work.
In my case, it was intermittent - sometimes all gears shifted smooth, sometimes 2nd would be hard, sometimes Reverse would be hard, sometimes 3rd. I drained and replaced the oil and found that it was bits of plastic left over from a broken speedometer gear. Since the magnet can't catch plastic, they wandered around and would sometimes get stuck in the shifter mechanism. If your symptoms are like mine, it would be wise to drain and replace the oil.
If the synchros are worn, you'll probably find gold flecks in the oil instead.
