INJEN CAI owners CHECK this out
So my 99 5 spd was acting jerky and stalling out so I took it to Nissan. They told me my MAF sensor was bad and that they would replace it, which they did for a "small" fee of $750. The first 15 minutes of my drive home was perfectly fine but then it started stalling out again so I pulled over and popped the hood. This is what I saw.
Now I don't know about the rest of you guys who have this intake, but mine did NOT used to have that BLACK THING in the middle. Looks like Nissan actually customized my custom intake! I would've never thought Nissan would even go near aftermarket work.
Anyhows, whatever they did, it didn't work. Just wondering...comments? suggestions on how to proceed from here? Take it back to them? What should I do, this is very weird...

man ... this gives me flashbacks of a mobil auto repair shop who wanted to charge me $700 for parts and labor to replace my knock sensor and 1 sway bar link..
btw, a knock sensor is $75 and a 2 sway bar links are $35 total and are easy as cake to install.
just be careful out there dude, 90% of mechanics are greedy and dont know much more than the informed driver about automobiles.

that is your MAF sensor. that is what they are suppose to do. at my VW dealership i charge about $40 and i think MAF sensors are like $110-130. Plus diag on the car which could be 1 hour, which would be near $110. So my total if i wanted to overcharge you would be like 300$.
Ask how $700 came about? Sensor is like $150 tops. based off an average of $100 labor rate. they charged you about 5hours. which makes no sense. I see maybe 1 hour to look at it, and maybe 1-2 hours to replaced the sensor.
You have every single right to take it back to them. They will have to fix it and take the lost. If they haggle you speak with the service manager.

I'm assuming the MAF that came with the injen intake was there prior. I'm just shocked that Nissan would actually go near it, I know they don't like to get involved with aftermarket work...
The breakdown on the invoice was $500 for parts, $180 for labor, and some change for misc and tax...

Im really lost. Please explain to me what was there before you brought it to them ?? Your car will not drive without that MAF. Who put your Intake in ??
You could have seriously bought an MAF on here for $50, spend half an hour, clean your TB, IACV, and install your MAF. Save yourself $435 after a 6 pack and TB cleaner.
Or Ill drive up to Boston, buy an MAF for you, and change it out for you for $375. Half the price

What there was between the two pipes before I brought it to Nissan was a silver piece the same size and shape as the black thing but matching the other injen parts, and it came with the injen intake. I was just assuming that since you guys are saying that the black thing is MAF, then what was there before was the injen MAF (obviously not stock MAF).
Yes the codes were pulled, and it said bad Air Flow Meter.

An injen intake is not aftermarket work, and in some cases, it's worse than stock. it's not a custom intake either.
By the way, I do auto work, I can rotate your tires for 500 bucks and seafoam the car for 1000.

the cost of the MAF from a dealer seems kind of pricey. i was able to get one for another nissan for $350 and if you installed the intake, the you could have replaced the MAF by yourself as well.
just curious..did you buy that CAI used? it seems real dirty. seems like some corrosive acid was splashed on it.

a list of your biggest mistakes
1) Having an injen intake which probably made you lose HP instead of gaining it
2) Thinking that its the dealer, its got to be good. Not knowing that the dealer will rape you, should have at least took it to a reg. shop
3) Not knowing what you're paying for, $500 in parts is a lot of parts considering if it's just the MAF
4) Saying that you had no MAF in the first place, you cannot drive without the maf since it senses how much fuel to give to your car.
5) Trying to hook up your car without any knowledge, every car is different. An intake on a honda can very well add 10 hp to the wheel, but our cars, basically none.
I feel bad for you, but hey, good lesson learned??? post before you do anything. I post whats wrong with my car to get a second opinion even though i'm 90% sure i know whats wrong. You're still a newb, but you didn't have to pay $750 for someone to tell you that you're a newb. Tons of the guys here on this org knows 1000000% times more than a full time head mechanic. Goodluck and stop wasting money...literally..
