Goto your local auto store. Buy a can of R134a refrigerant. Locate the small blue plastic cap on the low pressure AC line in the engine bay. Follow instruction on the refrigerant can.

Get it done professionally and have them put the dye into the system, so you can check for the source of potential leaks if the problem reoccurs anytime soon.

I had to replace my R134a three years ago and again 2 days ago and I had them put the dye in. I may have a small leak. If the problem reoccurs, they will put in some kind of product that will hopefully seal the leak.

I had the same problem, I ended up getting the can of frion that also stops leaks. Problem stopped after that. It basically stops leaks and adds frion so I dont think it can hurt to try it, but its up to you. Good luck.

You may want to check your coolant level as well

My 1996 Maxima is really inconsistent when it comes to the AC. On a 88 degree day, I turn on my car (cold engine, hot interior), and I get nothing but hot/warm air. I drive around and let the engine warm up and come to a stop light, turn off my AC then turn it back on and I get COLD air. The light turns green and I begin to drive around then the AC gets warm again. The AC is always COLD whenever I go on the freeway (60+ MPH). So I took my maxima in to the shop and had the pressure valve replaced (i'm guessing that's the expansion valve) since they said that the pressure would jump around. Still got the same pattern. I'm stumped.

Have a shop check for leaks! You can also eyeball it yourself! Check the ac hoses for any cracks. Are the A/C lines cold? Replace as needed. Also if your like me my other max was a manual a/c not the digital but make sure your not using "econ" on my car i have to click "auto" then select a temp, then change the fan speed if needed. But its most likely that you need new o ring seals. I had my car visit the shop 3x and it works fine now. But any ac will work better when going faster cause your belts are going faster (i think). i bet one of these are your problems.

-Need new o rings
-leak in compresser (not good)
-have humidity in the drier
-need r-34 charge
-Crack in a AC hose.

if your lucky like me new o rings solve the problem. Have a shop do a vacum test on it. O rings+ install was like 12$
