Trans finally went out on me at 285,000 miles...

Well, the transmission on my 97se (auto) finally went out on me (RIP). I was able to get 285,000 miled on it so I guess I really shouldn't be too upset. Well the good thing is, I found another transmission with only 52,000 miles on it from a 1999GLE at junk yard for only $300. I ran a carfax history on the car to see if the transmission really had such low mileage and sure enough everything checked out accurately. I had it installed for $400 and I am now back in business!

You sure got good use out of it, and the other one you picked up was a nice deal.

How, who installs transmissions for 400 bux on maximas? How did you get it out of junkyard, a friends pickup truck? I keep getting ripped off before I joined .org
so how do you guys do it? Mine is hesitating a lot lately.

last a hell of lot longer that a lot of us. Plus $300 for a 52K tranny, good deal.

Hopefully this one will last as long as your other one.

Very impressive. I would have taken the opportunity to do a 5Spd Swap, but to each his own. Congrats on the amazing deal.

Are you the original owner of the Maxima? Wow 285k! I've got 64k on mine so I guess I'll be good to go forever, lol!

I'm right behind you. Have a 95 GLE w/ 218k miles. Shifts hard from 1st to 2nd but other than that, seems to still be running ok..... Should probably change the fluid one of these days. ;-)

Man, how do you drive the car? is it all highway? hard, granny style, or normal?

Also what kind of fluid do you use, where did you get it changed (flush or just change) and how often.

Thats good use

The junk yard I went to takes the transmissions out of the vehicles on its yard for you. It took them probably a couple days to get the trans out of the vehicle for me. Afterwards I went to pick it up in a van. I saw the trans on their website. Its funny though, because the transmission will actually fit in the trunk of your maxima (thats with the trunk not closing all the way). Anyhow, I took it to this shop in Mundelein, IL called CarMedix. The guy's name who took care of it all for me is Carl. Its a full service auto shop that I was recommended to from a friend of mine whom is also an org member. I have had it in for a week, and so far so good. Smooth shifts, great ride.

I was pleased with geting 285,000 out of the trans. I bought the car used with low mileage back in Sept 99 with 40k miles. I used to drive over 120 miles a day, (all highway) for 5years back and forth to my job. To be honest, I really didn't keep up the the maintenance for the trans like I should have. I didn't do my first trans flush until the car had 170k miles. Then I did the next flush around 260k miles. I am not sure what kind of fluid they used at the shop for the flushes. As for the engine, I changed the oil every month for 5 years straight. I will try to make sure I get my trans flushes done regularly from now on.

230,000 miles on my 95. Everything seems just perfect on it, still shifts hard. Although i'd be curious to when the tranny has been flushed, hopefully she's got a lot of life left!

Did you have a lot of crap in your trunk? When I picked up my current trans from Dixit in ATL, trans and TC went in with much space to spare, more than half the trunk left. The RE4F04A isn't small by any means (rear end seems to squat a bit), but it's certainly not that large. Now a 4L60E, that fits in our trunks, just barely...
