getting a new intake, advice plz, also need help/opinions on other minor stuff
SubscribeYea i want somthing cheap that sounds good and is fairly straight foward to install and is not a pain in the ***. I have minimal tools. I also want one that sounds cool. Also how hard is it to do this? Is there a tutorial somewhere? Where is a intake that i can purchase from a store? i checked autozone but they just had drop in filters....
My list of stuff to do
-Fix cupholder <done>
-fix spoiler <did it but broke off again>
-new tranny fluid <done>
-new oil <done>
-change powersteering fluid
-Paint the chrome grille (is this a good idea or will it chip off? how much will a bodyshop charge you think? i just want the grille to match the color of the car like a regular SE.-install and purchase intake
-get windows tinted (how dark can i go legaly?)

For an intake, I suggest getting a cone filter and a MAF adapter, should be fairly cheap and you can get it at a performance shop or on eBay. Very easy to install, all you need is a screwdriver, 10mm wrench, and 10mm socket with the ratchet, instructions should be in the stickies.

Im looking for an intake too and the CAI is a little to muich for me, I just want the extra boost without such a crazy price tag and maybe not to loud. I just have a budget Y-pipe, might get a APEXI muffler but will leave the stock B-pipe. would any of these be good? Any suggestions are welcomed...

lol, those will not give you a boost, just a lot of noise sounding like boost, you are better off with the stock intake, especially for an automatic.Originally Posted by Stagnet04

Don't you need a pipe for that or anything else to hook it up? will that give you any power? cuz I always hear people say to get an intake, it will give you like 5 HP's...or is that just Bullsh!t...

i would say look on ebay for a BOMZ Cold air intake... it cost me ~60 shipped... then dont even do the full cold air, just use the first pipe...
the thing about pop chargers is that the air supposedly is too turbulent upon entering the TB and CAI i had to worry about the water getting sucked in when going through puddles (and i have seen wayy to many civics and integras on the side of the highway during a storm :-P)
just using the first pipe would be what they called a "hybrid intake" its a little longer than the short ram pipe, but not exactly cold air either. it upped my maximas mid range power SOO MUCH with my exhaust that i was beating myself in the head for waiting so long to replace my ghetto obx short ram i had in the car.
intake maybe will give you 5hp... but if your entire exhaust is stock youll end up with just a nice sound and maybe better mpg.

check it out.
1st tho... dont buy much if anything related to intakes from ebay. some have ones that work, but most of them are not real.
you want to buy K&N or something from a reprutible seller like cattman.
alot of people like to put a k&N flat filter in the air box and then make some holes in the box to make it sound better and get more airflow.
i personaly like the K&n cone from say stillen - tho its pricey and you can buy parts cheaper elsewhere.
im guessing the k&N cone will give you power in the upper grid, so it wont likly help out in low end (hey im guessing from what i have read on this site).

stock intake tubing is very effective.....aftermarket stuff is a waste...the air box is the most restrictive part....so pop charger or cone filter is ur best bet...the rest is all a waste.....the cone filter or pop charger will giv eu a nice growl but nothing too annoying
I pieced together an intake with a 6" K&N cone filter and an intake kit off of ebay (threw away filter), for a total of about $60. Sounds really good, but probably not worth the money. No real power, and the sound comes from air swirling, which eliminates any small gain you might have got.
I'd vote you stay stock.

Thats the best answer Iv ever heard, so the Bomz CAI is a good choice then, with maybe a better cone filter? I do have a budget-Y so I think it should help out.. So would it be one of these?Originally Posted by NAPhi_Shift

BTW do you have pics of it installed on your car?

Yeah, it looks like Ill be going that direction...

One of the only reasons Im leaning towards getting an intake is cuz People who have them have told me they do make a difference in performance and the stickies also say it, I just don't want a crazy sound and also want to see what people on here would suggest is a good intake to go with, but we'll see...Originally Posted by Chickan

yeah it should be one of those (though my filter was red) MAKE SURE if you do order it that they do include the MAF adapter plates
the filter (though its not K&N) should definitely be fine (supposedly its reusable too) but i would just spend the 40 dolalrs on the K&N one down the line when that filter gets dirty. (but it def shudnt be an issue for a while)
i have the budget pipe too and you will def feel a difference, plus its not a bad sound
too bad i have an exhaust, i could never really appreciate the sound of the intake alone

yea our stock intake includes something called a Helmholtz Resonator....if u rad up on it u will want to keep ur stock setup......with aftermarket intakes you tend to lose some throttle response

Have you ever had an intake?, cuz I think im just gonna end up getting one to try i out and if I don't like it, ill just sell it....
Cone with MAF adapter. Don't mess with anything between the MAF and the trottle body, you'll end up loosing power. I have this setup and its good, even in hot weather right now. It may bog A LITTLE in city driving, but when you're hammering it, you'll be in the higher RPM's and it wont affect anything in a negative way...and its cheap.

Naphi Shift was explaining the Bomz kit and that one sounds really good...but would any of these be just as good?

I have a Frankercar Intake & Stillen pop charger, took the Frankencar filter off (too small) & replaced it with the Stillen (Bigger)! You may lose some low end power, but wtf were not driving race cars!!! It'll give you nice mid-range torque & sounds alot better also! Originally Posted by Stagnet04

Those replace the midpipe resonator, you don't want to do that...just go to autozone, buy yourself a filter, and look for a MAF adapter somewhere. Its the cheapest and smartest(IMO) way to do it. Try to find a velocity stack like a JWT too.
oh yeah...people will be able to hear that its not stock, thats for sure.

Listen to this guy, here's some evidence that stock midpipe has more power: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ght=FRANKENCARQuote:

My car ran alot better with the Stillen/mid-pipe Originally Posted by 99grnmaxgxe

& also, sounds better!Like I said, we're not driving race cars!

yeah, I think Im gonna go with the MAF adaptor and cone filter, then ill probably dabble with the CAI or maybe a combination of both. Does anyone have a link on a good set up? Cuz Iv never installed an intake before so I want to make sure I have all the right pieces.....

Just get a MAF adapter somewhere, and buy a 3" K&N air filter. I bet you can get both at Autozone.

Is this nessasary? If so where can I get one? or doesn'e the stock box have one?
